Washington Township May Televise Government Meetings

Some residents have repeatedly asked for council and other meetings to be broadcast.

Washington Township residents may start seeing the workings of their local government on TV.

After repeated requests from some residents, the Washington Township Council agreed this week to investigate what would need to be done to get their meetings — and those of other township government boards — broadcast on the local cable channel WCTV.

David Snyde, a resident who has asked for the meetings to be televised, said that it would allow those who can't get out to the meetings, such as seniors, a way to know what's going on in the municipal government.

"They're all taxpayers," Snyde said. "They're entitled to the same services as people who can get here."

Officials discussed the proposal during their work session.

"I don't see any problem doing it," Council President Steve Cascio said.

What's not clear yet is just how the meetings will be televised — live or prerecorded, with a camera operator or with a fixed camera.

Fred Voss from WCTV said they already have the technology in place to broadcast pre-recorded footage.

"We just need the go-ahead from the council," Voss said.

Live meetings may require some new equipment, he said.
