An unidentified man reportedly made off with an undetermined amount of cash from the bar and restaurant Saturday morning.
A burglar made off with an undetermined amount of money after fleeing from Burke's on Old Hook Saturday morning, Westwood Police Chief Frank Regino said. Members of a cleaning crew called police at 8:29 a.m. Saturday after they reportedly heard a noise and saw a man run out the back door. Police discovered a basement office had been entered and a metal cash box with an undetermined amount of money in it had been taken, according to Regino. They were not sure if the man had been in the bar from the night before or if he had come in after the cleaning crew, he said. Westwood Police Officers conducted a speed survey on Sand Road following complaints from residents that drivers were racing down the road.
The worst speeders in the Sand Road area of Westwood are the neighborhood's own residents, according to Westwood Police Capt. Frank Durante. Westwood Police conducted a speed survey on Sand Road during February and March following complaints from neighborhood residents that drivers were racing down the road to cut between Old Hook Road and Harrington Avenue. Police spent three weeks tracking the speeds of cars for a few hours each day on Sand Road, gravitating toward the morning and evening rush hours. The average speed police clocked was 23.59 miles per hour, Mayor John Birkner said. The survey included a total of 546 vehicles, Durante said. New Jersey School Board Association forum offered the opportunity for parents to hear from local law enforcement and school officials on what is being done to make schools safe.
When it comes down to being ready for an emergency situation in schools, the key element is preparedness. For a little more than two hours Wednesday night local law enforcement and school officials tackled the pressing issue of school safety in front of an audience of 200 made up mostly of parents by a show of hands. The new officers were informally sworn in Friday afternoon so they could begin training at the police academy next week.
Westwood hired three new police officers this week after officials narrowed down a pool of more than 200 candidates. The council officially voted to hire the new officers during their sine die meeting Thursday and the officers were sworn in during an informal ceremony Friday afternoon so the can begin training at the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute. The new officers are Kevin Mullaney, Tristan Ganter and Keith Bott. "I look at these soon-to-be police officers and members of the Westwood Police Department and I just couldn't be prouder," Mayor John Birkner said. Firefighters cut open the car to free the woman.
Westwood firefighters freed a woman who was trapped in her rolled-over car late Friday morning. The woman was driving eastbound on Harrington Avenue at about 11:50 a.m. when she swerved and glanced off a tree near the corner of Berkeley Avenue. The driver lost control of the silver Chevy, which rolled onto its side as it slid across the intersection and jumped a curb across the street, according to Police Chief Frank Regino. The driver "doesn't appear to be seriously injured," Regino said. There were no passengers in the car. Firefighters used hydraulic tools to cut open the roof of the car and free the woman, who had been trapped inside. The Westwood Ambulance Corps transported the woman to an area hospital. The man's life may have been saved by a custom roll bar he installed in the car, cops said.
A custom roll bar likely saved the life of a man who flipped his car off the road, according to Westwood Police Chief Frank Regino. The man was driving northbound on Forest Avenue at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday — and was probably speeding — when he hit a curb and flipped, according to Regino. Neighbors said they found the man crawling out the back window of the partially crushed vehicle. He suffered no serious injuries. The driver had "put quite a bit of money" into customizing the car, and a roll bar he installed probably saved his life, Regino said. A man who police say broke into a Westwood Avenue apartment Thursday morning was found in Orangetown, N.Y.
Updated at 3:34 p.m. A suspect wanted for allegedly breaking into a Westwood apartment Thursday morning was arrested in Orangetown, N.Y., according to Westwood Police Chief Frank Regino. Police received a call from a woman after 10:30 a.m. Thursday saying that a man had broken into her Westwood Avenue apartment. The man had apparently broken a window on the street entrance of the building and then kicked in the door of the woman's apartment, Regino said. The man, 49-year-old Robert Driscoll of Spring Valley, N.Y., was apparently an acquaintance of the woman and may have been her boyfriend. Grants from the Division of Highway Traffic Safety are paying for sobriety checkpoints and extra patrols in Westwood and other towns.
Westwood Police will be making extra efforts to crack down on drunk driving this month. The department is participating in the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign from August 17 to September 3. The effort will include sobriety checkpoints and extra patrols paid for with grants from the Division of Highway Traffic Safety. “Many people believe that after a few drinks they’re still safe to drive,” Gary Poedubicky, Acting Director of the Division of Highway Traffic Safety, said in a press release. “Even one drink can impair your judgment and reaction time, putting not only yourself, but everyone on the road, in danger.” Almost 11,000 people die due to impaired driving each year, according to the Division of Highway Traffic …

Westwood Firefighters, DPW and Bergen County HazMat cleaned up four containers of hydrochloric acid dropped around Westwood Friday.
Four containers of hydrochloric acid were dropped around Westwood Friday afternoon, according to Fire Chief Jaymee Hodges. Leaking acid turned the asphalt yellow at the intersection of Lafayette Avenue, Ridgewood Road and Forest Avenue. The roads were closed as officials cleaned the scene. Members of the Bergen County HazMat team, along with the Westwood Fire Department, DPW and Police Department responded to the scene. Officials used baking soda to neutralize the acid before removing it to the DPW. Three other containers were dropped around town but did not leak.
