Monument to 'Community Spirit' Stands at Westwood Hospital

New Jersey sculptor Bob Hill crafted the monument to represent the efforts of residents to reopen the former Pascack Valley Hospital.

When HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley held their open house Saturday, CEO Chad Melton presented a new sculpture designed to represent the community's support of the hospital's opening. When the Pascack Valley Hospital first opened in 1959, much of the funding came from money raised in the communities around the hospital. Now the new hospital is set to open June 1 and many have compared the support from area residents to the original effort.  The new scupture unveiled Saturday, titled "Community Spirit," stands nearly seven feet tall. It depicts a group of hands holding up a bronze sphere, symbolizing the efforts of many residents of Westwood and surrounding towns who supported the hospital through its state hearings and legal battles since …

The former Pascack Valley Hospital closed in 2007.

While the new hospital will occupy the same space as the former, work has been underway over the past year to renovate the building and update it to improve the experience of patients, according to hospital CEO Chad Melton. More than $147 million has been spent on the renovations and new equipment, hospital officials said. The renovations are now nearly complete. "It was once a great facility and it will be again," Melton said. Hackensack University Medical Center President and CEO Robert Garrett called the opening a "historic event," noting that this is the first license New Jersey has granted…

The Westwood Planning Board approved the proposed signs for HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley.

When HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley opens next year, it will include a fresh set of signs designed to quickly show visitors the way to the emergency room. The Westwood Planning Board unanimously approved a plan for a set of new signs during their meeting Thursday. Four existing monument signs will remain in the same location, but receive a facelift and another will be added to a different location. One of the existing signs may later be removed or shrunk, as needed. There will also be two 10-square-foot signs over the front and rear entrances of the hospital and a "primary sign" in front designed to let drivers know the hospital is there. I think it's funny that Englewood & Valley are saying that they would lose money & have problems financially-they didn't have any problems when PVH was open to begin with. If the CEO (I will not mention his name) & the Board of Directors weren't so finically irresponsible PVH wouldn't have closed in the 1st place. Plus The Record didn't help any by saying that the hospital wasn't a good place to …   more ›

Very good news! Thanks to everyone who lobbied for this to happen, from the local elected officials to the people with lawn signs. The other hospitals seem to care more about corporate survival than they do about patients. Both are important but people come first.   more ›

Pay a visit to Valley Hospital ER. Patients are seen by physicians in hallways where privacy is non existent (HIPAA violation??), have a several hour wait to determine their status, and long delays for admission due to the lack of beds available. The need for HUMC to reopen the hospital and serve the nearby communities should not be subject to rhetoric from other facilities whose interest is …   more ›
