Hillsdale Mom Finds Bone Marrow Donor in Germany

Karen Takla Farag was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia in December.

A bone marrow donor drive held in Westwood in January didn't find a match for Hillsdale mom Karen Takla Farag, who is battling cancer, but a suitable donor was found for her in Germany. A 39-year-old German woman found through the program Be The Match agreed to donate stem cells from her marrow for Takla Farag's treatment for AML. She was present at Sunday's drive via Skype. In addition to the potential donors, Sunday's drive raised more than $2,500 for Be The Match, a bone marrow donor registry, Pizzella said.  Have…

The test to find out if you are a match is less burdensome than brushing your teeth! If you are lucky enough to be a match for Karen or some other person in need, the donation process is EASY, and can save a life. What could be more rewarding than helping a neighbor get well? Having had the cousin to leukemia, lymphoma, I have witnessed many friends gravely ill, hoping for a generous person to …   more ›
