Anyone interested in serving on their local school board has until June 4 to submit a petition to the county. Board members are responsible for a variety of duties each year, including setting district goals, overseeing the budget and curriculum and hiring administrators and staff. There are four seats up for election on the Westwood Regional Board of Education this year, including two three-year terms from Westwood, one three-year term from Washington Township and a one-year unexpired term for Washington Township from outgoing member Barbara Gregory. She's retiring from the board in order to spend more time with her family and traveling.
Barbara Gregory, a 24-year member of the Westwood Regional Board of Education, has announced she will resign from her seat June 30. Gregory said she wanted to spend more time with her eight grandchildren — two of whom are Westwood Regional students — and traveling with her husband. "It's been an interesting, long run," she said. "I'd do it again, for the kids." Gregory said she was proud of the accomplishments she has helped the district achieve over the years, including shrinking class sizes, implementing new technology, raising test scores and creating the new middle school. New Jersey School Boards Association rep Alfred Annunziata will speak to the Westwood Regional Board of Education Thursday.
Alfred Annunziata, a representative of the New Jersey School Boards Assocation, is scheduled to make a presentation at the Westwood Regional Board of Education meeting Thursday. Annunziata wil speak to the board about their search for a new superintendent. Current Superintendent Goeffrey Zoeller has resigned effective April 25 and is currently on a paid leave of absence. Acting Superintendent Rory McCourt, the district's director of elementary education and technology, is currently filling the role. Board members decided to take quotes from the NJSBA and private firms to assist their search for a new superintendent.
The Westwood Regional Board of Education made their first step in the search for a new superintendent during their meeting Thursday night. The board decided that they would seek quotes from both the New Jersey School Boards Association and some private firms for assistance in their search, according to Board President Roberta Hanlon. Superintendent Geoffrey Zoeller resigned effective April 25, following criticism for taking home a district-owned generator and truck for Hurricane Sandy. The board unanimously voted to accept Zoeller's resignation at their previous meeting and granted him a paid leave of absence from January 25 to April 24. Board Member Rusty Miller works for a family-owned business that has contracted with Westwood Regional schools since 1997.
The Westwood Regional Board of Education is scheduled to vote on a resolution Thursday to have state officials review a possible conflict of interest with new board Member Rusty Miller. Miller works for the Westwood Truck Center, which has contracted with the district for vehicle maintenance since 1997, he said. The company is owned by Miller's family and has contracts with several area school districts. Miller was elected in November and joined the board this month. The resolution would send the matter to the state Commissioner of Education for review. Dr. Geoffey Zoeller will remain the superintendent of the Westwood Regional School District until 2018.
The Westwood Regional Board of Education unanimously approved a new contract with Superintendent Goeffrey Zoeller during their meeting Thursday. The contract will extend Zoeller's term as head of the district from July 1, 2013 until July 1, 2018. He will make $157,500 each year with the possibility of making about $23,600 extra in merit bonuses each year if he meets goals set by the board. Board of Education President Carol Mountain described Zoeller as "a great superintendent." "I'm extrememly happy to have him coming back," Mountain said. Zoeller said he was pleased with the approval and he hopes to raise test scores and increase both the number of colleges students are accepted to and the number of scholarships they earn. Amendments put two more student days into the calendar
Members of the Westwood Regional Board of Education unanimously approved the addition of two days for students in the 2011-2012 district calendar Thursday. The changes came after district schools had to be closed following the October snowstorm. All schools will be open for full days Jan. 16 and Feb. 21, which were originally given off. Instead of having a staff development day Jan. 16, the district has moved that to Feb. 20. The change allows all district schools, except Jessie F. George Elementary School, to retain three emergency closures for the winter. George School was closed an extra day after the storm because of power outages, so it now has two emergency closures available for the remained or the school year. Education officials …

During an update about the district's counseling offerings for students, the guidance supervisor outlined how staff members have implemented the new anti-bullying legislation that went into effect in September. Supervisor of Guidance Joan Mei spoke during the Westwood Regional Board of Education meeting last week to outline how the district has handled the changes in policy and answer any questions from board members and the public. Members of the Westwood Regional Board of Education and the public are expected to hear a presentation from the guidance director Thursday night regarding harassment, intimidation and bullying. The district had to implement policies based on new anti-bullying legislation that went into effect at the beginning of the school year. There is now greater emphasis on investigating all allegations of bullying. Guidance Director Joan Mei serves as the point person for the anti-bullying issue and will be talking about it Thursday. My friend always said get the petition from the county office so the school does not know you are running until it is too late for them to get somebody in there to carry out thier agenda! I believe the petition gets returned to the county, so they will never know who is running until all petitions are in. I am sure you can find a dozen friends who will keep thier mouths shut for a week or two.   more ›
