A group of Bergen residents seeking to repeal the county's "blue laws" intend to get 2,500 signatures for a petition by the end of June so they can get their initiative on the ballot in November. "Modernize Bergen County" has now just about completed their petition and members will be gathering signatures at community events and other public places around the county, according to Rosemary Shashoua. They aim to get all 2,500 legally-required signatures by June 30, before many families begin going away for summer vacations, though they may get extras to be safe.  State Assemblyman Robert Schroeder may be forced into bankruptcy. Authorities are on the hunt for a burglar who was caught on video busting through the front door and stealing undisclosed amount of cash from the Fardale Deli & Mini Mart in Mahwah. A man walking through a Mahwah neighborhood Wednesday afternoon was arrested on drug possession charges less than 24 hours after an alleged cocaine dealer was arrested about a block away, police said. A Glen Rock man with a history of theft convictions was arrested Saturday for allegedly scamming a woman out of $11,000 in Essex County. When it comes to handling a school emergency situation, preparedness is key, according to local law enforcement and school officials who tackled the pressing issue of school safety in front of an audience of about 200 parents …

Hurricane Sandy damaged a total of 74 homes in Westwood, Washington Township and Hillsdale, according to state Department of Community Affairs data reported by NJSpotlight.com. There were 38 Westwood homes with "major damage," meaning costs between $8,000 and $28,800. A total of 85 homeowners and 12 renters in the zip code which includes Westwood, River Vale and Old Tappan applied for aid, according to data from FEMA. Washington Township had one home with major damage and 33 with minor damage, meaning costs below $8,000. There were 33 homeowners and seven renters who applied for aid in the township. Hillsdale had two homes with major damage. There were 38 borough homeowners and three renters who applied for aid. The owner of a Washington Township property being considered for use as a CVS violated New Jersey's Flood Hazard Area Control Act, according to officials from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). In a February 4 letter to 660 Pascack Realty, LLC, the owner of the properties, Bureau of Coastal and Land Use Compliance and Enforcement Regional Supervisor Armand Perez wrote that the violations included the removal of vegetation, placement of fill and construction of a retaining wall. Elizabeth Fasciano, the 7-year-old Westwood girl who residents had rallied to support, died Sunday, according to her obituary. Elizabeth was diagnosed with brain cancer when she was 13 months old and underwent numerous treatments during her life. The …

A Westwood ambulance and a SUV collided on Broadway near the Westwood Plaza late Thursday morning. The ambulance was headed north to a mutual aid call in Hillsdale, Police Chief Frank Regino said. A River Vale resident in a Nissan SUV was driving down Lake Street toward Broadway and reportedly accelerated to make it through the intersection before the traffic light changed, he said.  The driver of the SUV was hospitalized with minor injuries, Regino said. No one in the ambulance was injured. An applicant has filed to open a new Dunkin Donuts in the Washington Town Center strip mall, replacing one which previously closed. A 30-year-old Washington Township woman drove off Pascack Road and hit a tree at about noon Thursday, according to Police Lt. Rich Skinner. The woman had been driving southbound on Pascack Road and had just passed through the intersection of Ridgewood Road when she veered off the road and hit a tree, Skinner said. Firefighters responded to the scene to cut open the car to free the driver. A corporate bankruptcy has brought the end of the Washington Township Getty gas station and garage. The business will be shutting its doors by February 25, according to Ted Foundopoulos, the owner. Getty Petroluem Marketing (GPMI), the company which Foundopoulos had contracted with to operate the gas station, declared bankruptcy December 5. As a result, …

A donor drive at the Westwood Community Center Sunday drew more than 200 residents who had their cheeks swabbed to see if they are a match for Hillsdale mom Karen Takla-Farag, who requires a bone marrow transplant. It will take six to eight weeks before it is known if one of the potential donors is a match, Hillsdale Councilman Frank Pizzella told Patch. Plaintiffs suing State Assemblyman Robert Schroeder have been awarded a total of more than $13 million by judges in New Jersey, court records show. There were 14 judgments filed against Schroeder since February of last year, totalling $13,079,841.40 owed to different plaintiffs. Dr. Geoffrey Zoeller, the superintendent ofWestwood Regional Schools, resigned from his position effective April 25 via a letter to the school board. The board unanimously voted to accept his resignation at their meeting Thursday. The board also voted to grant Zoeller a paid leave of absence from January 25 to April 24. Board Member and former President Carol Mountain, who introduced the motion, said the board and Zoeller had come to a "mutual agreement" that he would resign his position. Officials at HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley expect to take their first patient June 1, according to CEO Chad Melton. A former teacher at a Paramus Yeshiva who worked with youth in Teaneck has pleaded guilty to child pornography and exploitation charges, federal prosecutors announced Tuesday. The ex-Yeshivat Noam teacher, 27-year-old Evan Zauder, used the Internet to entice a 14 to 15-year old in New Jersey to engage in sexual activity two times between April and November of 2011, prosecutors said. Between December 2010 and May 2011, he also amassed a collection of hundreds of videos and pictures showing child pornography stored on four devices seized during an FBI search of his Manhattan apartment in May.
