Lawsuit Against Assemblyman, Supreme Court Decision, Police Promotions Top This Week's News

Another civil lawsuit has been filed against Assemblyman Robert Schroeder of Washington Township. Harrington Park resident Phillip Corvelli alleges in a complaint filed in Hackensack April 30 that he made three loans to Schroeder totaling $245,000 in May and June of 2012. Corvelli is seeking more than $339,000 for the loans, interest and his court costs. The New Jersey Supreme Court unanimously decided Monday to uphold a contested 2007 decision from the Hillsdale Planning Board to approve a proposed housing project near Pascack Road. Caliber Builders, Inc. applied to the Board to build "Golden Orchards," a single-family age-restricted housing development, on a property off Ell Road. The site is located mostly in Hillsdale, with a small …

Teaneck police are searching for four men who beat a motorist before one of the attackers stole his minivan in a road rage attack early Sunday, authorities said. Police found a homeless man from Hackensack hiding underneath a bed in a Mahwah home Wednesday morning, authorities said.   A 27-year-old man is facing charges of drug distribution after authorities raided a Ridgewood home Thursday night. Local Mom's Marrow Donor, Memorial Scholarship For Girl Top This Week's News

A bone marrow donor drive held in Westwood in January didn't find a match for Hillsdale mom Karen Takla Farag, who is battling cancer, but a suitable donor was found for her in Germany. Takla Farag, the mother of a student at Meadowbrook Elementary, was diagnosed last December with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), a cancer which affects bone marrow cells, overwhelming healthy blood cells and making them unable to fight infections. A 39-year-old German woman found through the program Be The Match agreed to donate stem cells from her marrow for Takla Farag's treatment for AML. She received the donated cells via an IV March 13 after a courier brought it over from Germany. A new committee in Westwood is creating a scholarship to honor the …

More than 100 people face charges in a drug investigation prompted by a "stunning increase" in heroin overdose deaths across Bergen County, Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said Thursday. The approximately 120 arrests ranged from drug traffickers moving the heroin between Trenton and Paterson to dozens of buyers from leafy North Jersey communities, Molinelli said. Last year, Bergen logged 28 overdose deaths, a more than 100 percent jump over the prior year. Eleven men and women were arrested on charges of stealing identities to open credit cards in an alleged scheme that is believed to have defrauded more than 70 victims. Matthew Certo, the principal of Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School, has resigned effective July 1. Certo joined the school as principal this yearafter previous principal Tom Gorman left for a job at Ridgewood High School. In a letter sent to district parents Monday morning, Interim Superintendent Rory McCourt wrote that Certo was resigning due to "personal and family reasons" and he will be on a leave of absence for the rest of the school year. Woman Hit By Train, Bogus Bomb Threat, School Performance Top This Week's News

One woman was in the hospital after being hit by a train at the Westwood Train Station Wednesday afternoon, NJ Transit spokeswoman Courtney Carroll confirmed. Train 1621 was headed from Hoboken to Spring Valley when the woman made contact with it "for reasons unknown," Carroll said. The woman was transported to an area hospital, but details of her condition were not immediately available. The Westwood K-Mart was evacuated for about an hour Wednesday afternoon while police searched the store for a bomb, according to Westwood Police Det. Sgt. Rod Fortunat. The store received an anonymous call at about 2:24 p.m. saying that "something was going to go boom" in the store, according to Fortunat. The caller was not specific about the type of bomb…

A burglar made off with an undetermined amount of money after fleeing from Burke's on Old HookSaturday morning, Westwood Police Chief Frank Regino said. Members of a cleaning crew called police at 8:29 a.m. Saturday after they reportedly heard a noise and saw a man run out the back door.  HackensackUMC at Pasack Valley CEO Chad Melton recently sat down with a crew from WCTV for an interview and took them on a tour of the soon-to-open hospital. Paige Aiello, 22, a student at The College of New Jersey, was last seen on Tuesday; her car was found a day later in a New Brunswick parking deck, authorities said.
