Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Westwood, Washington Township and Hillsdale. Local stores are having special deals for the year's busiest shopping day.
While many shoppers will be lining up early at big malls to buy their holiday gifts on sale Friday, some local stores are also offering deals and specials to draw customers to Westwood. KMart in Westwood Plaza is offering deals on toys, electronics, tools, jewelry, clothes and home decor. The Gap on Westwood Avenue will be selling select items for 60 percent off. Some locally-owned businesses also have specials for Black Friday. Blooming Hearts Treasure Shop will have 10 percent off everything in the store on Black Friday, as well as every Thursday and Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. for the rest of the year. The newly-opened Sogno Coffeehouse on Broadway roasts their own coffee and makes their own crepes from traditional Parisian recipes.
A new European-style coffee bar in Westwood is offering freshly-roasted coffee and crepes prepared from traditional Parisian recipes. Sogno Coffeehouse opened last week under the direction of husband-wife team John and Alissa Vitale. The coffeehouse has a variety of moderately priced options — a crepe with coffee runs between $6 and $8.25 — in a setting inspired by traditional European coffeehouses and creperies. Opening a coffeehouse was a dream for Sogno co-owner Alissa Vitale and coffee/culinary expert John Vitale from the time they met.
