Bergen Prosecutor Forms School Security Task Force

More than 160 schools across Bergen County slated for security reviews, prosecutor says.

Officials are set to inspect more than 160 Bergen County schools in an expanded security initiative formed after the Newtown elementary school massacre, the county prosecutor announced Monday. Under a newly formed county task force, police chiefs in towns that requested the safety reviews will designate a police liaison to receive training from the prosecutor’s office and work with school officials to develop a security plan, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.  “This task force system will create a permanent security environment whereby local schools will have a greater access to information and assistance in their efforts to keep our schools safe,” Molinelli said in a statement. Westwood, Hillsdale Schools Make Preparations After Connecticut Shooting

Local schools are increasing security and preparing for students' questions about the incident.

Westwood Regional and Hillsdale schools are increasing security and providing guidance for students with questions after a gunman killed 20 children and several adults at a school in Newtown, Conn. last week. Hillsdale Superintendent Richard Spirito and Westwood Acting Superintendent Rory McCourt both wrote letters to parents about the incident. Both administrators wrote that they were working with local police to increase security. They also wrote that school staff would be reviewing security protocol and strictly adhering to all safety policies. The administrators suggested that parents should discuss the incident with their children, if they are old enough. Guidance counselors and teachers will also be ready to help with students' …
