A new committee in Westwood is creating a scholarship to honor the memory of Elizabeth Fasciano. Elizabeth was just 7-years-old when she died after a long battle with cancer earlier this year. Joseph Abou-Daoud, the executive director of the Westwood Chamber of Commerce and a member of the new committee, said they were inspired by Elizabeth because of how hard she fought against the disease. She was diagnosed with brain cancer when she was 13-months-old. "There should be no reason this community doesn't remember her forever," Abou-Daoud said. Skyline, a theater company based in Fair Lawn, will award a $1,000 cash scholarship to one high school senior planning to major in the arts.
A Fair Lawn based theater company is now accepting scholarship applications from Bergen County high school seniors interested in pursuing their college degree in the arts. Skyline Theatre Company has for the past five years awarded the $1,000 cash scholarship to one senior planning to major in theater, television, film, or communications. “They need to tell us why their passionate about continuing their education in the arts,” said Sam Scalamoni, Skyline’s artistic director. The scholarship committee, he says, will consider academics and extracurricular activities, but is focused mainly on awarding the scholarship to a student who, through their essay, demonstrates a clear motivation to continue in an area of the performing arts. The Westwood Heritage Society, a volunteer organization that is dedicated to the preservation of the history, beauty and spirit of the Borough of Westwood, will award its Cheryl Todd Memorial Community Service Scholarship to a high school student who is a resident of Westwood, N.J. and who is completing his/her senior year. The Society will be awarding scholarships totaling $2,000. The 5K race will benefit the Sgt. Christopher Hrbek Scholarship Fund.
The first-ever Dad's Dash is scheduled for this Sunday in Westvale Park. The event will benefit the Sgt. Christopher Hrbek Scholarship Fund. Hrbek, a Westwood native, was deployed to Afghanistan with the Marine Corps when he was killed in 2010. The scholarship was set up honor Hrbek's memory. It awards $2,500 to a graduating Westwood Jr./Sr. High School student "pursuing a career involving service to others" each year. Sunday's events will begin with a tribute to the armed forces at 8:45 a.m. Marines will be on site for the ceremony. At 9 a.m., the 5K race will start.
