Flood Effects Are Concern With Patterson Street Apartment Plan

More than 1,000 truckloads of dirt would be imported to the site as part of the project.

A plan for a new 57-unit apartment building on Patterson Street in Hillsdale would require 1,040 truckloads of fill to raise the portion of the site where the building and parking lot would sit. Richard Eichenlaub, an engineer for the project, testified during a Hillsdale Planning Board meeting Wednesday that retaining walls would be built as part of the plan, ranging from 2 or 3 feet in height at the front end of the property and rising to 8.5 feet at the rear. They would need 18,977 cubic yards of dirt — 16,581 of which would be imported — to fill the area, he said. Delivering all the fill would take about two weeks, he said. Hillsdale Among 10 Bergen Towns Supporting PSE&G Infrastructure Upgrade

PSE&G has proposed statewide upgrades to its infrastructure to protect against damage from severe weather.

Hillsdale was one of 10 towns in Bergen County and 32 across the state to recently pass resolutions supporting PSE&G's proposed $3.9 billion infrastructure upgrade. "[T]he extremes in weather we’ve experienced the past two years require new, extraordinary measures to reinforce our systems before the next Sandy strikes,” PSE&G President and COO Ralph LaRossa said in a press release. Borough officials previously said …

County Building New Patterson Street Bridge

Construction on a new bridge on Patterson Street in Hillsdale is expected to start this summer.

Hillsdale Mayor Max Arnowitz said the project has been anticipated for years, as the old bridge has been deteriorating. Holes in the bridge were recently patched with metal and, during Hurricane Floyd, pressure from passing water in the Pascack Brook actually make the bridge sway, he said. The new bridge will be slightly higher and built to allow water to pass under it more smoothly. The updated design may also help alleviate some flooding, accordig to Arnowitz. "It should help flooding a little, but it's not the panacea that's going to stop all flooding in that area," Arnowitz said. Borough Engineer Chris Statile …
