The Westwood Zoning Board shot down an application for a strip mall at the former Chevy dealer last month.
A developer has withdrawn an application to build a strip mall on Kinderkamack Road and is considering appealing the Westwood Zoning Board's decision to reject his plan to build another strip mall at the former Chevy dealer. Developer Nicholas Aynilian had proposed to build a pair of five-unit strip malls at the former Chevrolet of Westwood building on Kinderkamack Road and the empty lot across the street. Whether or not Aynilian will pursue the appeal will depend on whether he wants to "invest any further in this effort at costs which, even if successful, may jeopardize the financial viability of the project," he wrote in an email. The first plan, for the defunct showroom and garage at 39 Kinderkamack Road, was rejected by the board in …

The Westwood Zoning Board unanimously voted to deny an application to build a new strip mall on Kinderkamack Road.
The Westwood Zoning Board rejected an application to build a strip mall at the former Chevy dealer on Kinderkamack Road for the second time in less than a year during their meeting Monday night. Board members unanimously voted to deny the plan, which called for a portion of the building to be demolished and replaced with a smaller 8,051-square-foot mall that would have included a 7-Eleven and as many as four other businesses. Members said they were concerned with traffic, a proposed pylon sign, and the use variance for a convenience store in a site near a residential zone. "I think they could have made it a little less instrusive," board member Eric Oakes said. David Lafferty, the applicant's attorney, said he believed the plan would be …

Residents who live on Kingsberry Avenue, near the former Chevy dealer, asked the Westwood Zoning Board to reject the application for a strip mall on Kinderkamack Road.
A decision for an application to build a five-unit strip mall with a 7-Eleven on Kinderkamack Road is expected to come at the Westwood Zoning Board's next meeting. The board heard comments from the public about the plan during their meeting Monday, including some both against and in favor of the plan for the new 8,051-square-foot mall at the former Chevrolet of Westwood near Emerson. Kingsberry Avenue resident Michael Meisten said he was worried about safety for children who live on the street or play baseball at the field at the far end, who might be tempted to cross Kinderkamack Road to reach a 7-Eleven. Meisten also said he was opposed to the plan because 7-Elevens generally are open 24 hours per day and he was concerned that patrons …

The Westwood Zoning Board is hearing an application for a five-unit strip mall at the site of the former Chevy dealership on Kinderkamack Road.
The site of the former Chevrolet dealership on Kinderkamack Road will likely never be home to another car dealer, according to Norman Dorf, the property's owner. The site is currently being examined by the Westwood Zoning Board as a possible location for a new five-unit strip mall which would be anchored by a 7-Eleven. The applicant has requested a variance to allow the convenience store use at the site as part of the plan because they are not permitted in that "limited business" zone. Dorf's family ran the dealership from 2001 to 2006, when it closed. The site was not ideal even then because most large car dealerships had moved to highways, he said. The only other business that looked at the site since then was Subaru, which decided …

Here's a look at the week ahead.
Some Hillsdale residents are concerned about the safety of local children because of a proposed sober living home near George G. White Middle School. The Hillsdale Council is scheduled to discuss the property during their meeting this week. Donna Lally, the home's owner, previously told Patch that she understood the concerns, but believed there would not be any problems. She plans to have as many as four "executive men" living in the upstairs portion of the home. The residents would have already completed rehab programs. There would be no court-ordered residents and they would voluntarily pay to stay in the home. The location is ideal for a home like this because it is within walking distance for residents to run errands and use ublic …

The Westwood Zoning Board is hearing plans for new strip malls at the defunct Chevy dealer on Kinderkamack Road.
A developer planning to build a pair of strip malls at the site of the former Chevrolet dealership on Kinderkamack Road in Westwood has agreed to hold off a pending lawsuit against the borough. The Westwood Zoning Board denied a plan from the same developer, Kmack North Associates, for 39 Kinderkamack Road in May, citing concern over a requested variance for "general retail use" at the site. The developer then filed an appeal and a second application for the same site. David Rutherford, the board's attorney, said at a previous meeting that he believed the board did not have jurisdiction to hear the second application while the first was still pending in court. David Lafferty, the developer's attorney, said Monday that they would remand the…

The developer proposed to build a new retail center at the former Chevy dealer on Kinderkamack Road.
A developer, whose application to build a new strip mall on Kinderkamack Road was denied in May, has filed a writ appealing the Westwood Zoning Board's decision and also submitted a new application for the site. The initial plan, submitted by Kmack North Associates, proposed to replace the defunct Chevrolet dealership on Kinderkamack Road with a new five-unit retail space. The site is located in one of Westwood's Limited Business Districts, which are only zoned for some specific retail uses. The applicant had requested a variance for "general retail use" at the site, but board members said they were uncomfortable granting that much leeway. Kmack North filed an appeal and a second application after the first one was denied, according to …

The applicant had planned to replace the empty building with a five-unit retail space that would include a 7-Eleven.
The Westwood Zoning Board unanimously voted to deny an application to build a five-unit retail space on the site of a former Chevrolet dealership on Kinderkamack Road during their meeting Monday night. Board members expressed concern about a requested variance for a "general retail use" at the site, where only specific uses — like a car dealership or large appliance store — are allowed. There are no commercial zones in Westwood where a general retail use is permitted, according to board Chairman William Martin. Instead, the uses which are allowed in each zone are listed in the borough's Master Plan. "I think the general retail request was a little bit too undefined," board member Eric Oakes said. The Westwood Planning Board completed a re-…
