George School Students Learning About Conservation

The school in Washington Township has been focusing on environmental issues this year.

Throughout the school year, many activities have related to the theme of conservation. For example, the school adopted a Leatherback turtle named “George Sr.” and each class adopted a sea animal. The school is in the process of planning a visit to the Maritime Museum in an effort to learn how to protect ocean animals. Finally, the highlight of this year’s theme was a visit from photographer, author, and well-known conservationist Michael Patrick O’Neil. Principal Mary Ferreri is promoting the …

School Board Members Approve Calendar Changes for 2012

Amendments put two more student days into the calendar

Members of the Westwood Regional Board of Education unanimously approved the addition of two days for students in the 2011-2012 district calendar Thursday. The changes came after district schools had to be closed following the October snowstorm. All schools will be open for full days Jan. 16 and Feb. 21, which were originally given off. Instead of having a staff development day Jan. 16, the district has moved that to Feb. 20. The change allows all district schools, except Jessie F. George Elementary School, to retain three emergency closures for the winter. George School was closed an extra day after the storm because of power outages, so it now has two emergency closures available for the remained or the school year. Education officials …

George School to Reopen Thursday

Lack of power had caused the elementary school to close Wednesday for a third day

UPDATED AT 5:25 p.m. Jessie F. George Elementary School will reopen Thursday after having emergency closings for three days in a row. The school was originally scheduled to have a delayed opening Wednesday, but it had to be closed all day because of lack of power. The rest of the district schools were open for full days. Superintendent Geoffrey Zoeller sent out an alert Wednesday morning informing parents that PSE&G had to cut power to the area around the school. "With no power, we have no choice but to close George School for today," he said. Later in the afternoon, he sent out another notice that George School would reopen Thursday for a full day. "All boiler and heating systems, fire protection systems and all other infrastructure …

He began talking about the preschool construction project, which converted a portion of the high school to accomodate the preschool program. That program was previously housed in the Sullivan Center at Our Lady of Good Counsel across the street. D'Agostino said because much of the work was done by members of his staff, …

Students Enjoy Field Day

Nice weather made the event even more fun

Students at several schools in the Westwood Regional School District had fun outside for Field Day Friday. They participated in events like frisbie tossing, basketball shooting and sprinting while enjoying the nice weather. At Brookside Elementary School, gym teacher Eric Pfeifer even brought some of his former soccer teammates from Montclair State University to play alongside the students. Patch visited Brookside and Jessie F. George School to check out the events. For photos from Berkeley Elementary School, click here.
