The book, The History of the Hillsdale Police Department 1898-1979 features historic photos, newspaper articles and other accounts of goings-on in the borough. The book includes stories — taken from the pages of the Hillsdale Herald, Record and other newspapers — about a police chief being chased off the road by gunmen, raids on restaurants serving liquor during the prohibition era and other historic fires and floods. Smith will be speaking about the book at the Hillsdale Library March 12 and March 19 at 7 p.m. An exhibit will also be on display through the end of …

Smith has been with the Hillsdale Police Department for about 15 years and serves as the D.A.R.E. officer and coordinator with schools, according to Stalter. Stalter said that almost all of the borough's officers applied for the promotion, and all were good candidates for the position. Mayor Max Arnowitz said he hoped to have a new officer working by September.

The borough council voted to let Police Chief Chip Stalter begin searching for a new candidate to replace Jeff Angermeyer, who will be leaving to take a job with the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office. "With Jeff leaving, we are down four patrolmen, and that's not acceptable," Mayor Max Arnowitz said, referring to some recent retirements from the department. Arnowitz said he would like to have a candidate for the council's August meeting and then have the new officer "on the street" by September. Stalter said he would advertise for police officers already certified by the New Jersey Police Training Commission so the candidate will not need much training to get …
