Englewood Hospital Seeks Expansion

Valley rival seeks three-story addition to one building, and a one-story addition at another.

Not to be outdone by competitors Valley Hospital and Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC), Englewood Medical Center has submitted plans to expand. According to a report on northjersey.com, the hospital has submitted plans to the Englewood zoning board to increase the height of its humanistic care center from 30 feet to 87.33 feet.  The project aims to move cancer treatment programs into one building, the report said. Another one-story expansion is also proposed for part of the building on Glenwood Road.  In addition, the project calls for tearing down an administrative building called North Annex, according to the report. Ten parking spaces would be added.  HUMC is finishing its construction work at the revived Pascack Valley …

Westwood Hospital Holding Presidents Day Job Fair

HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley is holding an employment open house for anyone interested in applying for jobs there from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday. The hospital has hired about 50 employees so far and will fill about 300 positions by the time they open June 1, according to hospital rep Lauren Zaccardi Samman. There are openings in many departments, including pharmacy, case management, laboratory, radiology, materials management, respiratory therapy, emergency department, risk management, security, plant operations, finance, nursing managers, staff nurses, housekeeping and food services. Westwood Hospital Invites Feedback Through Community Leadership Group

HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley has started a group with residents and local leaders from Westwood and surrounding towns for communication and feedback.

As HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley prepares for its opening this spring, hospital officials have been reaching out to the community to keep residents informed and get feedback. The hospital is hosting a Community Leadership Group made up of representatives from the towns around the area. The group will serve as a means of communication between the hospital and the communities it serves, Melton said. The group held its first meeting earlier this month. "My goal is to be as open as absolutely possible," Melton said. There are more than 20 members of the group, including local community leaders and representatives from various businesses, according to hospital spokeswoman Lauren Zaccardi Samman. Westwood Hospital Renovations 90 Percent Complete

HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley CEO Chad Melton said he expects the hospital to take its first patient June 1.

Officials at HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley expect to take their first patient June 1, according to CEO Chad Melton. Melton told Patch Tuesday that renovations to the former Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood are about 90 percent complete and they hope to have a certificate of occupancy for the whole building within the next month and have a license by April. The renovations will make the hospital an all around more comfortable place for patients than the Pascack Valley Hospital was, Melton said. The old pea green walls have been repainted white or other bright colors. Furniture in work areas is designed to dampen sound so it will not bother patients. Worker Injured Taking Down Decorations at Westwood Mall

A 27-year-old man was brought to a hospital by medevac helicopter after a coworker accidentally hit him with a bucket crane, according to police.

A man taking down Christmas decorations at the Westwood Plaza was rushed to a hospital by helicopter after a coworker accidentally hit him with a bucket crane Thursday afternoon, according to Westwood Police Capt. Frank Durante. Police received a call about the accident at about 3:18 p.m., Durante said. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered that a worker in a bucket crane had not seen the victim, a 27-year-old Pennsylvania resident, and accidentally lowered the bucket into the man's head. The two men were taking down Christmas decorations at the strip mall at the time of the accident. The victim was apparently not wearing a hard hat, according to Durante. Westwood Hospital's Approval Upheld by Appeals Court

HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley is scheduled to open next year. Englewood Hospital and Medical Center and Valley Hospital in Ridgewood had appealed the state's approval of the new Westwood hospital.

The former Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood is set to reopen as planned under new management next year after a court ruled in the hospital's favor Tuesday. A three-judge panel decided that they would uphold the approval of Hackensack University Medical Center at Pascack Valley in Westwood. Englewood Hospital and Medical Center and the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood had jointly appealed State Health Commissioner Mary O'Dowd's decision to approve the new hospital at the site of the former Pascack Valley Hospital, which closed in 2007. The decision was "arbitrary and capricious," according to the appeal. HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley is filling hundreds of positions before they open next year.

More than 900 people applied for jobs at HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley during an employment open house last week, according to hospital rep Lauren Zaccardi Samman. The hospital, located at the site of the former Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood, is filling about 40 positions this year and about 350 before they open in 2013. HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley is planning to hold an employment open house in Westwood on Oct. 10, according to hospital rep Lauren Zaccardi Samman. The hospital is looking to hire 40 people this year for positions in a wide variety of medical, technical and administrative fields. The hospital has plans to employ about 350 people by next spring, when they are scheduled to open. Report: Westwood Hospital Approval Challenged by Competitors

The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood and Englewood Hospital and Medical Center are appealing the state health commissioner's approval of HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley.

The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood and Englewood Hospital and Medical Center appeared in court Monday to ask a three-judge panel to make State Health Commissioner Mary O'Dowd reconsider her approval of HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley, according to a report on NorthJersey.com. O'Dowd approved the plan to reopen the former Pascack Valley Hospital in February following a recommendation from the State Health Planning Board last November. An attorney for Valley said he believed O'Dowd had considered HUMC's needs, but not the area's needs when she approved the plan, according to the report. Hospital Appoints New Nursing, Financial Officers

HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley recently filled two leadership roles, according to a press release from the hospital. Laura Cima, the hospital's new chief nursing officer, has previous experience at Hackensack University Medical Center, where was worked as the vice president of clinical operations and previously served as the vice president of nursing. Cima has a master's degree in business administration from Fairleigh Dickinson Univeristy and is currently pursuing a doctorate at the Seton Hall University Graduate School of Medical Education.
