Gov. Christie Praises Westwood Hospital's Reopening

The governor visited HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley, which is set to open June 1.

Gov. Chris Christie visited Westwood Thursday for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley.  Christie praised the hospital's officials for their work and State Health Commissioner Mary O'Dowd for ultimately approving the hospital last year. HUMC at Pascack Valley was the first hospital to receive a license from New Jersey in almost 30 years. "I'm thrilled that this is happening and we can be part of it together," Christie said. Christie and other officials also credited members of the community for their support in reopening the former Pascack Valley Hospital, which closed in 2007 at the same site. Christie said he gave his support to the new hospital because people in the region needed it. "It's all about the people …

Monument to 'Community Spirit' Stands at Westwood Hospital

New Jersey sculptor Bob Hill crafted the monument to represent the efforts of residents to reopen the former Pascack Valley Hospital.

When HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley held their open house Saturday, CEO Chad Melton presented a new sculpture designed to represent the community's support of the hospital's opening. When the Pascack Valley Hospital first opened in 1959, much of the funding came from money raised in the communities around the hospital. Now the new hospital is set to open June 1 and many have compared the support from area residents to the original effort.  The new scupture unveiled Saturday, titled "Community Spirit," stands nearly seven feet tall. It depicts a group of hands holding up a bronze sphere, symbolizing the efforts of many residents of Westwood and surrounding towns who supported the hospital through its state hearings and legal battles since …

Yet-to-Open Westwood Hospital Already Has Expansion Aims

HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley CEO Chad Melton wants the hospital to increase bed counts within the next few years, according to northjersey.com. Melton said he doesn't think Bergen competitors will "lose volume" as a result.

With Valley Hospital struggling to modernize its own facilities through a controversial expansion project, a major competitor announced it too has visions of expansion – and it's not even open for business yet. According to a Sunday report on northjersey.com, Hackensack University Medical Center at Pascack Valley is optimistic its new facility will drum up enough business to quickly expand. Pascack Valley Hospital declared bankrupcy in 2007 and has been dormant since. “If we truly have the volume here and the support we think, within the next three years we’ll be looking to add inpatient rooms,” Chad Melton, chief executive of the 128-bed hospital, told the news website. HUMC at Pascack Valley, scheduled to open June 1, is the first for-…

HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley hosted residents from Westwood and surrounding area towns for an open house and community day celebration Saturday in anticipation of their June 1 opening. HackensackUMC CEO Robert Garrett pointed out that this will be the first new hospital to open in New Jersey in about 30 years. "It's been a long time in coming, but we are about to make history here in Westwood," Garrett said. Visitors were able to take a tour of the 128-bed hospital's various facilities like operating rooms, patient rooms and the Bistro 250 cafeteria. There was also food, games, facepainting and other activities for guests. Hospital CEO Chad Melton highlighted some of the their amenities while speaking to visitors at the event. All the …

HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley Opening in Westwood June 1

The former Pascack Valley Hospital closed in 2007.

HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley is set to open June 1, exactly 54 years after the Pascack Valley Hospital first opened in Westwood on June 1, 1959. While the new hospital will occupy the same space as the former, work has been underway over the past year to renovate the building and update it to improve the experience of patients, according to hospital CEO Chad Melton. More than $147 million has been spent on the renovations and new equipment, hospital officials said. The renovations are now nearly complete. "It was once a great facility and it will be again," Melton said. Hackensack University Medical Center President and CEO Robert Garrett called the opening a "historic event," noting that this is the first license New Jersey has granted…

Westwood Store Closing After 40 Years, Owner Opening Hospital Gift Shop

Beverly Adler opened Arts & Ends on Westwood Avenue in 1973.

Beverly Adler is getting ready to close her Westwood store, Arts & Ends, for the last time this May. Arts & Ends has changed a lot since it opened 40 years ago. Originally an art store, Adler began selling some handmade jewelry and clothing. As trends changed and her customers began asking for designer brands, Adler continued to transform the store into the modern clothing shop it is today. "You can't keep it the same," Adler said. "You have to change, to keep up with trends." Adler calls it retirement, but really it's just another change. She will be taking over the gift shop at HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley when the hospital opens June 1. In the shop, Adler said she plans to continue carrying some jewelry and women's fashion tops, but …

New Sign Up At Westwood Hospital

HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley is schedule to open June 1.

Workers installed a new sign for HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley this week as renovations near completion. The hospital had been undergoing renovations since last spring and is scheduled to open June 1, CEO Chad Melton previously told Patch. A decision from state officials to allow HUMC and the Texas-based LHP to reopen the former Pascack Valley Hospital was challenged by both the Valley Hospital of Ridgewood and Englewood Hospital. A three-judge appeals court panel decided in December to uphold the approval. Hospital officials are planning to hold an event celebrating their opening in May. Have a question or news tip?
