The Sustainable Jersey program provides grants to towns that adopt "green" policies.
Hillsdale officials decided at a recent council meeting that they would pursue a "silver" certification from Sustainable Jersey, a program which provides grants and other awards to towns that adopt "green" policies. The borough's Green Team previously achieved a bronze certification from the program, bringing in grants for items like new recycling bins and programs in the schools. Green Team Chair Meredith Kates said at a prior council meeting that the borough has 220 out of the needed 350 points to achieve the next level of certification. The Hillsdale Council will review whether or not they want the borough's Green Team to pursue a new certification from the Sustainable Jersey program.
The Hillsdale Council will need to decide whether or not they want to pursue a "silver" certification from Sustainable Jersey, a program which provides incentives for towns which use environmentally-friendly policies. "We need to dig in and decide how we feel about sustainability as a community," Green Team Chair Meredith Kates said during a presentation to the council Tuesday. The Green Team previously worked on a project to achieve bronze certification for the borough three years ago, but that is expiring. George G. White Middle School, Meadowbrook School and Anne Blanche Smith School were all recently awarded grants from the Bergen County Utilities Authority.
The Bergen County Utilities Authority recently awarded grants to Hillsdale's three public schools for their ongoing environmental awareness programs, according to BCUA officials. The grants will be used to expand existing programs at the schools, according to Hillsdale Green Team Member and Meadowbrook mom Steaphanie Breuer. The BCUA awarded more than $84,000 grants to 90 Bergen County schools as part of the program this year. "Even at school, we have to create a more sustainable way of handling our daily lives," Breuer said. George G. White Middle School will use a $600 grant to expand their lunchtime composting program and develop a garden which will be maintained by students.
