Township Officials 'Disappointed' with Woodcliff Lake Decision to Keep GSP Exit 171 Issue Off the Ballot

Washington Township officials say they will continue working with Woodcliff Lake after the council there decided against a referendum

Washington Township officials said Wednesday that they are disappointed with the Woodcliff Lake decision not to put a referendum question on the ballot asking residents if they favored allowing a right turn off the ramp for Garden State Parkway exit 171, but they will continue to discuss the issue with the borough's governing body. Township officials had asked their counterparts in Woodcliff Lake for the referendum since they believe more motorists exit the Garden State Parkway at 168 because they can't turn right onto Glen Road in Woodcliff Lake from exit 171. They said the increased number of cars causes traffic congestion in the township particularly at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Pascack Road. Township Mayor Janet …

The mayor and council have clearly demonstrated that they simply do not care about what the residents want or think. Why should they? They are likely to run unopposed in the next election just as this bunch of cronies has for the last thirty years. The cast of characters changes slightly, but the nonsense continues.   more ›

Turnpike Authority Plans to Move Forward with GSP 168 Project Despite Objections

The NJTA assistant chief engineer sent a letter addressing the township engineer's response

New Jersey Turnpike Authority officials plan to proceed with a project to make changes at Garden State Parkway exit 168, even though local officials have expressed concerns. NJTA Assistant Chief Engineer Robert Fischer sent a letter to Township Engineer Paul Azzolina dated Aug. 11 responding to his comments on the project. In the nine-page letter, Fischer addressed Azzolina's concerns and provided reasons why the current plans to widen the exit ramp and make other changes would work. Azzolina attended the July 25 council meeting and went over the issues he saw with the NJTA improvement plan. He said he opposed changing the stop sign to a yield at the end of the exit ramp, favored a 90-degree angle orientation for the turn at the end of the…

Question of the Week

How Would You Change GSP Exit 168?

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority plans to make the ramp two lanes and put a yield instead of a stop at the end

The ramp at Exit 168 off the Garden State Parkway in Washington Township is a prime spot for car crashes, according to officials. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority has come up with a plan to make changes to the area, but the township engineer has said he sees problems with the design. The Turnpike Authority plans to make the exit ramp two lanes and put a yield instead of a stop for motorists. Do you agree with that change or think it will make the area more dangerous? Officials have said they would like the Turnpike Authority to allow a right hand turn at Exit 171 since they believe that would alleviate some of the traffic exiting the Parkway at 168. How would you change the design of the area around Exit 168 to make it safer and try to …

Can someone please tell me what the pending litigation is for not allowing the right turn off of exit 171? > Build a 168 B, wetlands - come on! > Install a light > Open 171 to right turns > Don't charge people getting off at the Ridgewood exit   more ›

Township Engineer Sees Issues with Turnpike Authority's Plans for GSP Exit 168

Paul Azzolina opposes yield, wants pedestrian improvements

Washington Township Engineer Paul Azzolina, who is currently reviewing the New Jersey Turnpike Authority plan for Garden State Parkway Exit 168 and preparing a response letter, went before the governing body Monday night to discuss his analysis. He said he opposes the use of a yield instead of a stop at the end of the exit ramp and would like to see some pedestrian improvements to the area. At the end of the ramp for Exit 168, motorists have the option of turning left or right onto Washigton Avenue. The line of sight has been a problem for years, Azzolina said, adding he sent a letter to the governing body in 2003 suggesting certain improvements. Officials said that area is where the majority of motor vehicle crashes occur in the township…

I am not one to take away from "open spaces or wet lands" but really, would any animals be displaced or the environment be altered that significantly? If it was started back in 2004 think of all the pain and suffering that would have been avoided. Making a 168B makes a lot of sense it would alleviate traffic pressure for all directions. I have seen more accidents making the right turn than left, …   more ›
