Washington Township Cell Tower Contracts Finalized

The tower is planned to be built at the township's Municipal Complex.

The planned cell tower at the Washington Township Municipal Complex is now really close to being built, according to Township Attorney Kenneth Poller. Poller said that he had finalized the leases with Verizon and AT&T Monday for the 120-foot tower. "We're right on the verge of getting this thing done," he said. Poller also said that the phone companies had agreed to let the township's emergency services put their own antenna on the pole in the future. Officials have been discussing upgrades to the Police Department's communication equipment. Township officials also finally settled on the tower's color — galvanized steel — as was recommended by both their engineer and Verizon's engineer. They had previously been planning to paint the tower…

I hope they never put it up. And I hope you find your cell phone service still stinks after they install it. It's to service Paramus not Washington Twsp. You won't see any improvement.   more ›

Temporary Cell Tower Up at Hillsdale DPW Yard

The borough will receive $30,000 per year for the space.

A new temporary cell phone tower was installed at the Hillsdale Department of Public Works yard last week. The 125-foot-tall tower contains antennas for MetroPCS, according to Borough Administrator Jonathan DeJoseph. Hillsdale will receive $30,000 per year for hosting the tower on borough property, according to DeJoseph. No other carriers are currently on the tower, which is temporary. DeJoseph said he did not know how long the tower would be in place. The borough is currently negotiating with several potential tenants for a permanent tower at the same location, he said. The bid from MetroPCS to build a temporary tower at the site was approved by the Hillsdale Council in August 2011.  Have a question or news tip? Contact editor Jim Leggate…

Hillsdale Cell Tower Project Won't Increase Height

AT&T plans to replace existing antennas on the tower in the Garden State Parkway.

A planned project for a cell phone tower on the Parkway in Hillsdale will replace existing antennas and not increase the size of the tower or number of carriers it holds, as some residents had expressed concern about. The tower is located at mile 168.2 on the Garden State Parkway, next to the Hillsdale Avenue bridge which crosses the highway. Borough officials discussed the project at a meeting earlier this month after they received a letter from an engineering firm about the plan, but council members said they didn't really understand the proposal. Some residents said they were concerned about possible additions to the tower because Hillsdale does not have authority over it. The tower is on the Parkway's land and falls under the New …

Washington Township Cell Tower Approved by Board

The Washington Township Planning Board approved Verizon's plan to build a 120-foot cellphone tower at the Municipal Complex.

A plan for a new cellphone tower in Washington Township got the go-ahead from the Planning Board Wednesday night. Board members voted to approve the plan for a shared 120-foot cell tower to be built on the north side of the Municipal Complex at 350 Hudson Avenue. The tower will be shared by Verizon and AT&T and include room for as many as two more wireless service carriers in the future. Any other carriers would also have to appear before the board. Radio frequency engineers for both companies testified that the tower would fill a large coverage gap in the township. The tower will be located in a 68-by-28-foot area surrounded by an 8-foot white vinyl fence. There will be a small building inside the fence used to house equipment for the two…

Washington Township Cell Tower Plan Complete

The township's planning board will begin hearing an application for the plan early next year.

A plan for a new cell tower in Washington Township is ready for a public hearing which could start as soon as January, according to township attorney Kenneth Poller. The plan calls for a 120-foot monopole with external antennas to be built on the north side of the Municipal Complex. The base of the tower and its equipment will be surrounded by an 8-foot white vinyl fence which will be designed to match the complex's Colonial style. Verizon recently completed some final design revisions and submitted it to the Washington Township Planning Board, Poller said this week. The board may begin hearing the plan as early as January. Some residents, like Ray Bernroth, have been eagerly waiting for the tower to be built to improve their phone service…

Westwood Seeks Greater Control Over Cell Towers

Following the approval of a new tower in downtown Westwood, officials said they may hire a consultant to help manage the two towers owned by the borough.

Westwood officials discussed the possibility of hiring a cell phone tower expert to help manage the borough's two towers and deal with applications to build new towers on private property during a council meeting this week. The discussion followed a decision from the borough's zoning board last week to approve a proposed 25-foot tower MetroPCS plans to build on top of Pascack Theaters.  Borough attorney Russell Huntington said MetroPCS should have made more of an effort to lease space on the nearby cell tower at the Westwood Fire Department. Greg Meese, an attorney for MetroPCS, told the zoning board that they had attempted to get space on the borough's tower, but there was not enough room. Adding MetroPCS to the existing tower would have …

Cell Tower Contract Almost Ready

Washington Township and Verizon are hashing out the final details for a new cell phone tower to be built at the Municipal Complex.

Washington Township and Verizon have almost reached an agreement for a new cell phone tower to be built at the Municipal Complex, according to township attorney Kenneth Poller. Poller said this week that Verizon was working on some final adjustments to the exact placing of equipment before the contract could be signed. He did not know exactly how soon the agreement would be signed. The tower will be a 120-foot monopole with external antennas. It will be built on the north side of the Municipal Complex and have an 8-foot white vinyl fence surrounding it. Officials previously said the fence would be designed to match the building's Colonial style. Once the contract is finalized, the proposal will advance to the township's planning board for …

Cell Tower Approved by Board

MetroPCS plans to build a cell phone tower above Pascack Theaters.

The Westwood Zoning Board unanimously approved an application from MetroPCS to build a 25-foot cell phone tower above Pascack Theaters during a special meeting Tuesday. As a condition of the approval, the tower will be housed inside a rectangular faux-brick case which will match the existing building. Westwood borough attorney Russell Huntington argued against the plan's approval before the vote, saying that MetroPCS had not made enough of an effort to obtain space in the nearby cell tower at the Westwood Fire Department. Huntington said it would be best to have as many cell providers as possible share each tower in order to minimize the number that are built. "Otherwise, there would be cell towers all over the place and, let's face it, …

Cell Tower Vote Coming This Week

The Westwood Zoning Board is considering a plan to build a 25-foot cell phone tower above Pascack Theaters.

The Westwood Zoning Board is scheduled to discuss a plan to build a cell phone tower above Pascack Theaters during a special meeting this week. MetroPCS has proposed to build a 25-foot tower above the theater, which would have a combined height of about 70 feet. The tower would have a faux brick surface designed to look like a smokestack. The tower would fill a gap in the company's coverage in and around Westwood, according to radio frequency enigneer Christopher Olsen. The plan requires variances for the tower's height and for the use, which is not permitted in the Central Business District. Greg Meese, an attorney representing MetroPCS, previously said the company has bid for space in a nearby tower at the Fire Department twice, but the …

Board Plans Extra Cell Tower Meeting

The Westwood Zoning Board agreed to hold a special meeting on Yom Kippur for a proposed cell tower because they passed a deadline set by the federal Telecommunications Act.

Experts working for MetroPCS finished giving testimony this week about a proposed cell phone tower to be built on top of Pascack Theaters. Members of the Westwood Zoning Board said they would need time to deliberate the issue before voting, but an Greg Meese, an attorney representing MetroPCS, said the company would not give another extension for the application because it had already taken more than 120 days, the time given for tower applications in the federal Telecommunications Act. "We don't have time," board Chairman William Martin said. "We're way past our deadline and we need to deliberate this." Board attorney David Rutherford said the board could vote to dismiss the application without prejudice, but a motion to do that was not …
