Just Hits, a business offering baseball and softball instruction from professional athletes, held a grand opening at their new location in Westwood Saturday. The business was started by Woodcliff Lake native Mike Just, who decided to move it from Park Ridge to a larger, 11-lane facility in Westwood. Just, who was signed to the Houston Astros for part of 2008, has brought on a team of instructors with professional experience, including pitcher Ryan Page, who was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays, and hitting instructor Greg Perret, who played professionally in Australia and Belgium, among others. A new business in Westwood is offering baseball and softball instruction from athletes with professional experience on the field. Mike Just, who has played for several professional teams and was signed to the Houston Astros for part of 2008, has assembled a group of instructors with first-hand knowledge of what it takes to make it to the pro level for his business, Just Hits. Besides himself, the staff includes pitcher Ryan Page, who was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays, and hitting instructor Greg Perret, who played professionally in Australia and Belgium, among others. Westwood's 9/10U team finished their season with only one loss and took second place.
Westwood's 9/10U baseball team took second place in their North East Bergen All Stars league this summer. Washington Township's 11U little league baseball team was undefeated and took first place in Maywood's Firecracker tournament. The team defeated Glen Rock, Oradell, Secaucus, Ramsey and Waldwick to take the top spot in their age group. The team also won the Bergen County Charity Classic over Memorial Day weekend. Let me be very clear in saying this, if you have ever worked in sports, namely baseball, there is no better time of year then spring training in Florida. None. Leaving, usually a winter and snow swept (except this year) airport somewhere in New York, the plane trip down there makes you think all at once of the moment you touch down. The plane door opens up to the terminal and you're hit at once by that blast of hot, Florida air. Riding to the hotel, you see palm trees, and small southwest style houses, coupled with the fresh, open-air smell of the warm gulf. All at once you, your senses are alive with the anticipation of seeing the ballpark. Getting there to see the sun rises over is as great as seeing Mickey Mantle at batting practice in …
