The Westwood Zoning Board unanimously voted to deny an application to build a new strip mall on Kinderkamack Road.
The Westwood Zoning Board rejected an application to build a strip mall at the former Chevy dealer on Kinderkamack Road for the second time in less than a year during their meeting Monday night. Board members unanimously voted to deny the plan, which called for a portion of the building to be demolished and replaced with a smaller 8,051-square-foot mall that would have included a 7-Eleven and as many as four other businesses. Members said they were concerned with traffic, a proposed pylon sign, and the use variance for a convenience store in a site near a residential zone. "I think they could have made it a little less instrusive," board member Eric Oakes said. David Lafferty, the applicant's attorney, said he believed the plan would be …

Residents who live on Kingsberry Avenue, near the former Chevy dealer, asked the Westwood Zoning Board to reject the application for a strip mall on Kinderkamack Road.
A decision for an application to build a five-unit strip mall with a 7-Eleven on Kinderkamack Road is expected to come at the Westwood Zoning Board's next meeting. The board heard comments from the public about the plan during their meeting Monday, including some both against and in favor of the plan for the new 8,051-square-foot mall at the former Chevrolet of Westwood near Emerson. Kingsberry Avenue resident Michael Meisten said he was worried about safety for children who live on the street or play baseball at the field at the far end, who might be tempted to cross Kinderkamack Road to reach a 7-Eleven. Meisten also said he was opposed to the plan because 7-Elevens generally are open 24 hours per day and he was concerned that patrons …
Members of the public will be able to share their thoughts Monday about a plan to build a strip mall at the former Chevy dealer on Kinderkamack Road.
Anyone with an opinion about a plan to build a strip mall at the former Chevrolet of Westwood on Kinderkamack Road will have an opportunity to share their thoughts this week. The plan calls for a 8,051-square-foot, five-unit strip mall to be built at the former showroom. The applicant has requested a use variance to allow a 7-Eleven to occupy a portion of the space. The Westwood Zoning Board is expected to hold a public comment period for the application during their meeting Monday. Previously, experts hired by the applicant completed their testimony for the plan and local property owner Bruce Meisel announced he intended to object to the application and was considering hiring his own experts to testify. Several Westwood residents who live…

A developer has proposed to build a strip mall at the site of the defunct Chevrolet of Westwood on Kinderkamack Road.
A formal objector has come forward against a plan to build a strip mall at the former site of the Chevrolet of Westwood, and several residents who live near the site have also expressed concern about the plan. The plan, which is currently before the Westwood Zoning Board, calls for a 8,051-square-foot, five-unit strip mall to be built on the site of the showroom for the defunct car dealership on Kinderkamack Road. Local property owner Bruce Meisel has objected to the plan because of a requested convenience store use variance to allow a 7-Eleven to occupy a portion of the strip mall. Mesiel noted that the borough recently changed its Master Plan and did not add the use. The developer, Nicholas Aynilian, and the property owner, Norman Dorf, …

Bruce Meisel said he was opposing the project because of a conflict between the application and Westwood's Master Plan.
A plan for a new strip mall on Kinderkamack Road is facing some opposition near the end of its application. Bruce Meisel, a local property owner and the president and CEO of Pascack Community Bank, announced at the Westwood Zoning Board meeting Monday that he planned to formally oppose a plan to build a 8,051-square-foot, five-unit strip mall at the former Chevrolet of Westwood on Kinderkamack Road. At the same meeting, the last of the applicant's experts completed giving testimony about the plan. Meisel said he was concerned about a requested use variance to allow a convenience store, likely a 7-Eleven, to occupy part of the shopping center. That use was not included among the borough's recent changes to its Master Plan, a document which …

The Westwood Zoning Board is hearing an application for a five-unit strip mall at the site of the former Chevy dealership on Kinderkamack Road.
The site of the former Chevrolet dealership on Kinderkamack Road will likely never be home to another car dealer, according to Norman Dorf, the property's owner. The site is currently being examined by the Westwood Zoning Board as a possible location for a new five-unit strip mall which would be anchored by a 7-Eleven. The applicant has requested a variance to allow the convenience store use at the site as part of the plan because they are not permitted in that "limited business" zone. Dorf's family ran the dealership from 2001 to 2006, when it closed. The site was not ideal even then because most large car dealerships had moved to highways, he said. The only other business that looked at the site since then was Subaru, which decided …

The applicant had planned to replace the empty building with a five-unit retail space that would include a 7-Eleven.
The Westwood Zoning Board unanimously voted to deny an application to build a five-unit retail space on the site of a former Chevrolet dealership on Kinderkamack Road during their meeting Monday night. Board members expressed concern about a requested variance for a "general retail use" at the site, where only specific uses — like a car dealership or large appliance store — are allowed. There are no commercial zones in Westwood where a general retail use is permitted, according to board Chairman William Martin. Instead, the uses which are allowed in each zone are listed in the borough's Master Plan. "I think the general retail request was a little bit too undefined," board member Eric Oakes said. The Westwood Planning Board completed a re-…

The plan requires a use variance for the site on Kinderkamack Road.
Westwood Council President Cynthia Waneck came to a meeting of the Zoning Board Monday night to share her opinion about an application for the first of a pair of five-store retail spaces planned on Kinderkamack Road. Waneck, speaking as a resident and not as a borough official, testified the Westwood Zoning Board needs to consider the 2011 Master Plan Reexamination before granting a variance to allow "general retail use" at the site of the former Chevrolet dealership. "They were very specific when they set forth what they wanted in that particular zone," Waneck said about the Planning Board members who worked on the reexamination last year. Developer Nicholas Aynilian has proposed to turn the defunct car dealership into a pair of strip …
