Washington Township Councilmen Concerned By Financial Records

The township's financial ledger was not updated for about 10 months this year.

Washington Township councilmen and residents questioned the way the town has been run for years during a council meeting Monday. The township is looking for three new employees to replace former CFO, treasurer and finance director Jacqueline Do, who retired at the end of October.The three positions are typically held by different people, with the treasurer acting as a "control function" in the township's form of government, according to township attorney Kenneth Poller. I mentioned once before regarding setting up an entity to raise money to retain legal counsel. I have investigated the procedures and we ( the residents) would set up a public , non-profit entity to allow residents to contribute on a tax deductible basis. Hurricane Sandy Costing Hillsdale $176K Next Year

The borough's council approved the emergency appropriations from the storm during their meeting Tuesday.

Emergency expenses totalling more than $176,000 will go into Hillsdale's 2013 budget. The Hillsdale Council unanimously approved the emergency appropriations for Hurricane Sandy during their meeting Tuesday. Many borough employees had to work overtime and gas was purchased in Massachusetts for municipal vehicles and generators after the storm, Mayor Max Arnowitz previously said. "Obviously, we're going to have to pay that back," Arnowitz said Tuesday. The council approved a total of $176,816.31 for storm-related emergency appropriations. Other costs would be covered by the borough's insurance, according to Administrator Jonathan DeJoseph. Arnowitz also said he expected FEMA would reimburse the borough for a large portion of the expenses. …

Hurricane Sandy Emergency Costs to Hit 2013 Budget

Hillsdale officials said they expect most or all of the emergency expenses to be covered by FEMA.

Emergency costs for Hurricane Sandy will roll over into next year's budget, but the total amount had not yet been determined, according to Hillsdale officials. Mayor Max Arnowitz had authorized department managers to spend as they saw fit during the storm and its aftermath as some supplies ran low and many residents faced power outages lasting for days. The borough and Old Tappan had to search for gas for municipal vehicles and generators, eventually finding some in Massachusetts. Police had to work overtime to cover the numerous calls coming in and long lines of traffic waiting at gas stations. DPW crews also had to put in extra hours after the storm to pick up the large amounts of debris left by the storm. "We had to spend the money," …
