The Fire Prevention Bureau, which is in charge of enforcing the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code, is located in the FireMore Department Building. Members of the bureau conduct inspections to ensure buildings are in compliance, and they conduct fire investigations to determine the origin and cause of a fire when arson is not suspected. If arson is suspected, the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office leads an investigation.

Westwood's all volunteer Fire Department answers approximately 280 calls per year, operating 24 hours a day, 365 days aMore year. The department headquarters has been at its current location since 1929, but the building was redone in 2004. The three-story facility houses two engine trucks, a ladder or aerial truck and a rescue truck. In addition to the large garage, the building has office space for the Fire Prevention Bureau, a fire communications room and a state certified training facility where classes, courses and grant writing seminars are held. The Hillsdale Volunteer Fire Department serves the fire safety and prevention and rescue needs of Hillsdale residents.More It also provides primary mutual aid to the towns of Emerson, Montvale, River Vale, Old Tappan, Park Ridge, Washington Township Westwood and Woodcliff Lake. The department has four trucks. Because it is an all-volunteer organization, it is always looking for new volunteers.
