Residents and staff can take an online survey to share their opinions with the Westwood Regional Board of Education.
Westwood and Washington Township residents can provide their opinions to the school board via an online survey about the next superintendent of Westwood Regional Schools. "The new Superintendent will need many skills and attributes that will make that person successful in the position, but we are asking that you identify for us the most important ones that in your opinion will be critical for that person to possess," board members wrote in an email announcing the survey. The survey is online here. It will stay up until June 7. The results of the survey will be compiled by R-Pat Solutions, LLC of Roselle Park, a firm which the school board approved during their meeting last week to assist them in the search for a new superintendent. Don Bosco pulled ahead and away from Bergen County in the third quarter to win their second consecutive county title.
The Don Bosco Ironmen outscored the Bergen Catholic Crusaders 5-1 in the third quarter of the finals in the Bergen County Lacrosse Tournament. That scoring outburst made all the difference and propelled the Ironmen to a 10-6 victory and their second straight Bergen County championship. The Ironmen had a rough go of it in the first half. Bergen Catholic goalie Matt Pedrick was on point early on and held the Ironmen to just three first-half goals. “They came out playing hard. We were struggling with our shots and their goalie played really well," said Don Bosco captain Teddy Sisco-Tolomeo. Don Bosco looked like a different team in the second half. They came out very aggressive, snatched control of the game and never looked back. "In the …

Officials said they hoped to have polling removed from schools for student safety.
Westwood Regional students won't have to go to class on June 4, when primary elections are held in schools. The district had two leftover snow days, so students will have off May 28 and June 4, Interim Superintendent Rory McCourt said Thursday. All after-school activities will still happen as scheduled. Officials had previously discussed moving the polling locations out of schools for security reasons, but the county refused, according to district Business Administrator Keith Rosado. McCourt previously told Patch that the district was reviewing their security and would "tighten procedures" following the shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. which left 26 students and staff dead. "Sandy Hook is still fresh in everybody's minds…

The authors of a study commissioned by Woodcliff Lake said splitting the regional school district would save their residents money, but cost Hillsdale and River Vale residents.
Hillsdale Mayor Max Arnowitz said Tuesday that the borough and River Vale "have commited 100 percent to fight" a proposed splitting of the Pascack Valley Regional High School District. Arnowitz's comments followed a Woodcliff Lake Council meeting Monday at which a retired CPA recommended Woodcliff Lake attempt to withdraw from the regional district, NorthJersey.com reported. James Kirtland, the CPA who helped prepare a study for Woodcliff Lake examining the possible effects of their proposed withdrawal from the district, said there would be "substantial overall financial and educational benefits" if Woodcliff Lake and Montvale pursued a separate regional district or had a sending-receiving relationship without Hillsdale and River Vale, …

She's retiring from the board in order to spend more time with her family and traveling.
Barbara Gregory, a 24-year member of the Westwood Regional Board of Education, has announced she will resign from her seat June 30. Gregory said she wanted to spend more time with her eight grandchildren — two of whom are Westwood Regional students — and traveling with her husband. "It's been an interesting, long run," she said. "I'd do it again, for the kids." Gregory said she was proud of the accomplishments she has helped the district achieve over the years, including shrinking class sizes, implementing new technology, raising test scores and creating the new middle school. "It has been an honor to serve as part of the Westwood Regional School family," she said. Gregory has spent much of her life in education, having previously worked …

Taxes could rise by $500 per year for the average Hillsdale homeowner if the district is dissolved.
An attorney and the authors of a study which reported that splitting up the Pascack Valley Regional School District "would succeed" will give a presentation about their findings and take questions from the public during a Woodcliff Lake Council meeting next week, NorthJersey.com reported. A report on the same subject prepared on behalf of Hillsdale and River Vale found that there would be high costs for residents of those towns if the district were split. The meeting is scheduled to take place Monday night at the Tice Senior Center, 411 Chestnut Ridge Rd. Woodcliff Lake and Montvale previously petitioned the Executive County Superintendent to withdraw from the district, citing a higher cost per pupil than that paid by Hillsdale and River …
Current Interim Superintendent Rory McCourt is set to hold the position through June 30.
Westwood Regional Board of Education President Roberta Hanlon said she hopes the board will select a new interim superintendent at their May 9 meeting. The Board interviewed three finalists for the position during a closed session meeting last week, but members did not yet have a chance to discuss the candidates, according to Hanlon. A committee of four Board members started the search in late March, she previously said. The Board has also heard presentations from several firms offering services to assist in the search for a permanent superintendent. The new interim would fill the role until a candidate is hired. Current Interim Superintendent Rory McCourt has been filling the role since December. He previously said he would not be seeking…
