Schools in blue states are excellent because citizens here take education seriously. As a result, weRead More fund schools accordingly through taxes. If you want low taxes, move to a dumb dumb red state where the education is atrocious and the citizens ignorant.

We addressed rezoning last year in a big way. We let our Mayor and elected officials know thatRead More ‘we the people’ of Wayne do not want hi density housing. But where exactly does that leave us? We are still awaiting final COAH mandates. Mayor Vergano told us succinctly that Company’s are not moving to Wayne and Wayne does not give tax breaks to businesses. In the same breath we were advised that Businesses want to move to areas where their employees can ‘live, work and play.’ So now, here we are with a newly expanded Economic Development Council to try and draw ‘ratables’ to Wayne. How exactly do we do this? The Board of Education is finalizing their budget. Once again, annually actually, there is another increase looming. The Council will begin working on their budget and I heard it from a Council member there will be another township increase and the County is sure to follow suit. I ask again, how do we entice businesses to move to Wayne? There is no economic incentive to the business nor to the employees. BAE has stated they are leaving Wayne because their employees cannot afford to live here. Our ever increasing taxes are making our community less and less affordable and our home values lower. The Mayor may just be right, businesses, ratables, just may not come to Wayne. If Businesses want to be in communities where there employees can live, work and play and Wayne is not affordable then Mayor Vergano is 100% correct. How then do we reverse this trend? We must stop the ever increasing taxes in this town. Other towns have done it, so too we must. We need to let the Board of Ed and the Township Council hear our objections to yet another annual increase. I have lived in Wayne for 19 years and my taxes have gone up every single year. We need not to accept even a little increase from the Board of Ed or the Town. We need to come out and be heard. Voice your objection to any tax increase. As our taxes continue to rise, and our home values continue to flounder, we are less likely to draw commercial ratables to Wayne. What then, HiDensity housing? Rezoning? The Board of Ed will be hearing public comments tonight and over the next few days. Let your voices be heard.

You don't need clean streets and sidewalks when your high school is rated in the top twenty NewRead More Jersey high schools! Oh wait, you mean HHS is NOT one of New Jersey's top twenty high schools? How could that be? With enrollment down to around 600, class size should be optimal. Where is the promised progress? I guess we'll have to wait for the NJ Monthly and NJDOE rankings to see if we beat Camden, or even Newark! It's sad for the kids who work really hard to do well.

BellairBerdan it's still the majority that still want it in .
Madeleine April 24, 2014 at 05:46 pm
Separation of church and state. Period. Even if the supposed "majority" want it in, anyRead More reference to God should not be in a public place (including the Congress, the Supreme Court....virtually the entire government). Eliminating the "under God" part in the Pledge of Allegiance is a start towards an America based on the founding principle: freedom for people to live the way they want to live (as long as he or she does not infringe on the rights of another person). Religion is a private affair, not a public one.
SILENT WOLF April 24, 2014 at 07:07 pm
Madeleine I question if you are indeed a christian or just an imposter. You are so adamant about thisRead More God issue , wanting the word God to go away..It's a personal issue isn't it . You can argue with the majority , but you won't win ....I've heard your side and you heard mine . What else are you wanting to change with this country the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. since this won't change.

Wow, WMS826, you should see a doctor about that chip on your shoulder. Nothing you say has anyRead More factual base at all. Not even worth debating with you at all. You've got issues with everyone who's not you. Sad way to go about life.
Andy Schmidt April 24, 2014 at 05:36 pm
WMS826 >>take my tax portion to the school system and apply it to a catholic or private schoolRead More of my choice << Humans form societies so that we combine our different strengths and end up with something more than the sum of the pieces. By members giving up a share of their own possessions, they are supporting even the weakest members and in return get to benefit from whatever unique other talents THOSE can contribute. Maybe Gutenberg wasn't a great deer hunter, but he figured out how to print books. The whole point of taxes is that we all contribute a certain portion of income for the COMMON good. You don't get to pick that "YOUR" property tax only fixes YOUR roads. That "YOUR" state tax only builds bridges YOUR plan to travel over, that "YOUR" federal income tax only pays for medical research in illnesses YOU suffer from on that particular day - or YOUR taxes go to YOUR private school. In "this great nation" you DO have the option to move to a smaller house to afford private school tuition, or to move yourself from the mail room to the executive floor of your business. But those are not entitlements you earn by being a fellow taxpayer, those are individual perks you earn based on your personal achievements. Personal responsibility - not just where it's convenient for you!
Andy Schmidt April 24, 2014 at 05:51 pm
WMS826 - of course, it is an indictment of the American education system that so many folks in thisRead More country cannot distinguish "society" from "socialism", "community" from "communism" - or don't know the definition of "liberal". I personal consider myself a political "republican", an individual "liberal", a fiscal "conservative" and a social "progressive" -- so you take your pick what label you want to attach to me that best fits your personal agenda.
I plead the 2nd tchk tchk April 22, 2014 at 04:12 pm
Marie, why are you conditioned to think that someone that needs pay more taxes because they have aRead More larger house? Why do you think that is fair? Why do you think that if someone spends money keeping their house nice, they need to be penalized with higher taxes? Shouldn't someone should be allowed to keep their house nice? So according to you, it is fair if I buy a house and let the paint go and let the place degenerate and I can have my taxes lowered. you are brilliant.
John Santaella April 22, 2014 at 04:16 pm
I plead the 2nd tchk tchk it doesn't work that way. Ask your town assessor about that.
Marie Intili April 22, 2014 at 05:49 pm
I didnt say you have to pay more taxes if you have a bigger house! Or a nicer house...you areRead More taking my words out of context! A two family home that is zoned for two families should only have two families living in it! Not 10 families! Thats all I said...I said nothing about letting your paint go or getting penelized with a higher tax because of size.....only what its zoned for!

Schools in general is nothing but fakes. Not even close to accurate. To many reasons to list. YouRead More have to many dishonest people involved in the outcome in changes that shouldn't be. Yes, schools play to make it look one way that is not even close to what it should be. They rig the outcome to make their school look good for certain students who they might have a connection with in some way. You can have students who rank higher in lower level classes that are not even close in comparison that has no business being 2 or 3 in a class.

Hey Joe-90% tax rate existed with a number of signifigant loopholes that resulted in a nominal taxRead More rate in the mid 40s for the highest earners...stop getting your talking points from MSNBC and think for yourself. and even if you took every dollar from the top 10% of earners in this nation, we would still have a deficit...spending is the issue, not revenue....do you get that fact or does your hatred for the wealthy cloud your ability to digest reality...
Joe R March 15, 2014 at 08:51 am
Hey SH, in the 1950s, the top marginal tax rate was 91% and the effective tax rate was about 51%Read More after the loopholes. Oh, so we don't have loopholes today??!? Ha, ha, ha. The current top marginal tax rate is 39.6% but that's before all the loopholes. The effective tax rate is even lower than 39.6%. JFK eliminated many of the loopholes and reduced the top marginal tax rate to 74%. That works for me.
SH Resident March 15, 2014 at 07:02 pm
Joe-I will agree to raise the marginal tax rate to 50%...what programs other than defense do youRead More propose to cut? Exactly none is probably your answer...cutting defense and raising taxes does not get us to a balanced budget...we need to cut spending...you socialists never seem to get that point...and moreover, how about EVERYONE has some skin in the game and has to pay some income tax.... you will never want to cut spending on social programs because then how will you bribe low information voters to win elections?

Jim, Geez you are the one who can't be that ignorant yourself. You couldn't be more wrong and inRead More denial. Nothing jives with any of these tests. They compare SAT's and some schools average 1535 total and think that is good. I think that score is unacceptable. Just a little over what the state requires. The H.S. do little or just enough to get by. Just passing is good enough for them. You have schools who some considered top schools bragging how great they are getting average sat's at 1545. @Speedz..You are right on and I agree it is hard to figure out what makes sense versus real.

Here's what I measure when considering schools- and this applies directly to Montclair and allRead More districts- Has my child been taught to be an independent thinker, an active problem solver, willing to take on challenges, work as part of a team, and the confidence to work independently? Has my child met a teacher who has motivated him/her to be their best academic self and created a lifelong learner? That's how success is measured. Numbers/statistic can be tugged, pulled, hidden, adjusted, and manipulated. The cold hard facts that your child has the attributes previously listed above is the true measure. That's done here in Montclair and other districts in New Jersey and beyond- or at least it was true before the core curriculum standards and the broads invaded.
ED April 12, 2014 at 11:54 am
esther, You have a few things right. Numbers/Statistics can be tugged, pulled, hidden, adjusted andRead More manipulated. By Who? The same people who are running the schools and handing in these reports. Everything in NJ is corrupted.
Alex C February 17, 2014 at 12:15 pm
I don't want NJ to be a full on right to work. I am actually against full on right to work as I seeRead More it as meddling in private business, which I am just as opposed too as I am public sector unions. I believe it should be right to work for the public sector. That's it. Also, I am educated enough in economics and history to know that unions alone did not lead to better working conditions in the U.S., and that if you eliminated all unions tomorrow, we would not return to the dangerous factories, and long hours, because we are at a point culturally that would never allow that. The unions have by and large outlived their usefulness. But again, whatever a private company wants to do is literally their business. My only issue is with public sector unions.
Phil Brooks February 18, 2014 at 01:32 pm
Alex, No, we won't return to the days of Triangle Shirtwaist as there are myriad OHSA rules to takeRead More care of that. But, eliminate collective bargaining and other agreed upon contractual terms and we will definitely take a step back. Sorry, but I feel big business alone won't take care of their employees, as it's profits first. They need a checks and balances system that unions provide. // Public sector unions? I see your point but, as there are so many people doing the same jobs (are you going to negotiate with every teacher, policeman, fireman and DPW worker individually?), collective bargaining is probably the way to go. But there should be provisions in place as to where every dollar of dues goes and you can check off where (or not) you want your dues money to go. How does that sound?

This same type of Bridgegatesque corruption, cover-up & retaliation is standard operatingRead More procedure at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in NYC by Port Authority Supervisors. Gov. Christie promised to disclose any evidence “that come forward that requires action to be taken.” He added, “I will take it, no matter how much it hurts me personally or dismays me, because this is the job I asked for, and I’ve got to do it.” I wonder if that applies to the well documented rampant theft of Lost & Found property at the Port Authority Bus Terminal by Port Authority Supervisors, and the illegal written policy of throwing lost valid passorts in the garbage instead of mailing them to their respective embassies if their owners could not be found. Now just imagine the damage that a terrorist group or an identity theft ring could do with those valid passports. Google “Donna Lebourne abc news" & see the vile face of shame being confronted and exposed for the world to see. http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/investigators&id=9105280 http://www.my9nj.com/story/24313600/inside-the-port-authority http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/investigators&id=9277998 http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/found_stolen_trashed_by_pa_V4RMICgPyy2bhAVzDkW9EL If the Gov. is a man of his word, he can start by axing all the supervisors at the Port Authority Bus Terminal involved in this criminal activity, the supervisors that turned a blind eye to it, and all the supervisors who participated in the coverup and retaliation as well. Every single one of them must be fired & prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for aiding and abetting this criminal activity. As a matter of fact, Gov.Cuomo stressed that the traffic scandal did not take place on his side of the bridge, which is controlled jointly by New York and New Jersey.“It was done on the Jersey side of the bridge,” he said. “The Jersey officials handled it. The thefts from the PABT’s Lost & Found Dept. by PABT Supervisors along with their illegal written policy of throwing valid lost passports in the garbage happened on the NY side of the GWB, so the New York officals should handle it. Gov. Cuomo it’s your turn to act, & don’t act like you didn't know. I've come to realize that ignorance is not only bliss, it is also contagious & spans both sides of the GWB. The ball is in your court. Finally, a traffic study on 9/11...really, what’s next, the Port Authority giving all TSA airport screeners the day off on 9/11/14 to see if that speeds up the “screening process study?” I guess that makes as much sense as the Port Authority’s written illegally policy of throwing lost passports in garbage & letting their supervisors steal from the Lost & Found Dept. at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The new investigatory panel should investigate these well documented crimes as well because the Port Authority has degenerated into a cesspool of crime, corruption, cover-ups & retaliation staffed with a bunch of clowns, cowards, liars & thieves. http://videos.nj.com/star-ledger/2013/12/george_washington_bridge_direc.html

I'm sorry, but that's uncalled for. Like our kids don't have enough pressure on them! BetweenRead More regular classes, after school programs, gymnastics, soccer and other activities. Now the district wants to add even more pressure by stating "it'll benefit the kids to give them more time on projects" That only means extra time constraints on other homework.
