Here's a look at the biggest stories from the past month in Westwood, Hillsdale and Washington Township.

The past month has seen a local business film for a TV show, progress toward the planned Joan D'Alessandro memorial and a grassroots group gain enough signatures to get a referendum on the ballot in November. Below are the most popular stories from Westwood, Hillsdale and Washington Township during August, in reverse order. 

10. Pascack Valley School Split Decision Could Come This Month

Woodcliff Lake officials have sought to withdraw from the districtbecause property owners there and in Montvale typically pay more money for the schools than property owners in Hillsdale and River Vale. A 1975 state law mandates that regional districts determine their tax levy allocation based on property values in each town.

Scott Cascone, the new principal of Westwood Regional High School, is planning to focus on the three themes for the upcoming school year.

8. Bergen County Leads NJ in Train Deaths This Year

Fifteen men and women across the state are believed to have committed suicide by train this year, according to NJ Transit spokesperson William Smith. As of August 1, a third of those suicides have occurred in Bergen County — the most for any county in the state.

7. New Wording Proposed For Joan D'Alessandro Memorial

The new version replaces the phrase "molested and murdered," which had raised concern from some officials and residents, with the word "lured" and specifies that Joseph McGowan, Joan's neighbor who molested and murdered her in 1973 while she was delivering Girl Scout cookies, was convicted of murder in the first degree.

6. Westwood, Washington Twp. Police Cracking Down on Drunk Driving

Local police will participate in the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign from August 16 to September 2.

In the show, "Restaurant Divided," Gyros & Goodies will be split in two. Once side will remain Greek and the other will offer a new style of food.

TD Bank filed to lift a court ordered freeze on the state assemblyman's assets last week, according to a media report.
