Hillsdale to Dedicate New Sept. 11 Monument

The memorial, built as an Eagle Scout project, will feature a piece of steel from the World Trade Center.

A new monument in Hillsdale built as a memorial to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks will feature a piece of steel from the World Trade Center.

The construction of the monument was organized by Eric Stigliano, a local Boy Scout who chose it as his Eagle project. Stigliano obtained donations from several vendors and assistance from the town and volunteers in order to get it complete.

Stigliano had also obtained a donation of World Trade Center steel from retired welder and Hillsdale resident John Mockler, who had worked it into a cross. Because of concerns over the religious symbolism, that piece couldn't be used, but Stigliano was able to get another piece through the Port Authority through Borough Administrator Jonathan DeJoseph.

"I'm very happy that I was able to get it," Stigliano said.

The memorial will be unveiled at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Veterans Park, followed by a candlelight ceremony at 7:30.
