C.A.T.S. Brings Pets in Need to Shoppers

Caring About The Strays is a nonprofit group which features adoptable cats and dogs lounging around its shop.

A Westwood-based nonprofit has continuously worked to lower the population of homeless pets for 17 years.

(C.A.T.S.) has a second-hand store at 80 Kinderkamack Road which provides the group with money to pay for the costs of feeding and caring for pets while they search for homes. Shoppers can meet some of the pets waiting for adoption in the store, while others stay in foster homes, according to Lynn Morchel, the group's founder.

The group keeps a complete listing of cats and dogs available for adoption on their website.

In addition to helping pets find homes, the group also helps lower the popultation of homeless pets by helping pet owners fix behavioral problems with their animals and by spaying or neutering wild cats.

"We don't want them to have litter upon litter of kittens that have horrible lives," Morchel said.

Morchel said she got the idea for the organization while she was living in an apartment building and saw people leave their pets behind after moving out. She started caring for the animals and then found the space in Westwood where the group's store is located.

"It all sort of fell into place," Morchel said.

Anyone interested in helping C.A.T.S. can take a foster pet while a permanent home is sought or by donating good quality antiques, art, women's clothing or hand bags for the shop.
