Bergen SWAN Studying 'Green' Pascack Brook Flood Mitigation

The group will look for environmentally-friendly ways to reduce flooding in the Pascack Valley.

A local group has acquired a grant that will go toward assessing the Pascack and Musquapsink Brooks and what environmentally-friendly projects could help reduce flooding around them.

Bergen Save the Watershed Action Network (SWAN) recently won a $9,150 grant from the Watershed Institute, according to SWAN Co-Director Mark Becker.

SWAN will hire environmental engineers to assess the areas around the brook for locations where they could undergo projects like increasing the buffer around the brooks and creating new water retention areas.

Bergen SWAN has preserved more than 3,300 acres of woods and wetlands as buffers around reservoirs since their start in 1988.

Becker said he expected the work to start early next year.
