UPDATE: Massive Berkeley Brush Fire Contained As…

Hanlon Named Westwood School Board President

The Westwood Regional Board of Education picked Roberta Hanlon as its president and Darlene Mandeville as its vice president for 2013.

The Westwood Regional Board of Education picked Roberta Hanlon as its president and Darlene Mandeville as its vice president for 2013 during the board's annual reorganization meeting last week.

"We've had some great accomplishments in the district and I'm proud to take over and continue the momentum," Hanlon said.

Hanlon told Patch she was aware that many people were focused on some recent controversies in the district, but hoped to focus on continuing positives like the recent state approval of the district's teacher evaluation instruments.

"There are some wonderful things attached to this school district," Hanlon said. "We have a great staff and we're looking forward to continuing a great year."

Hanlon and Mandeville will be sitting down with Acting Superintendent Rory McCourt to flesh out their goals for the upcoming year. Hanlon said she would wait until then to disclose what they hoped to accomplish.

Hopefully the BOE will now be able to move forward by taking care of outstanding issues, clean house, and begin to rebuild relationships with folks working in the District and their constituents. Best of luck to Mrs. Hanlon, and Mrs. Mandeville!

OMG, putting a board member in as president who is as much to blame for the Zoeller hiring is just plain stupid, an insult to any intelligent citizen out there. They have to be kidding. She wanted Zoeller in because he was a band person and her kid was a band kid. Now she is president. Whatever will happen to the sports program with her in charge? The human bobble head as president - what a farce!
Hardknocks January 10, 2013 at 11:54 AM
You are right on the money again Hoarse. Hanlon, Liddy, Mountain and Koch walk in lock step together. Attention all coaches, learn words like , oh shoot, darn it, dagnabbit. Roberta is on her broom and will be video taping you at your games. Yes, she will video the coach instead of the players. Political correctness at it's worst!

Hanlon as president is a disappointment. But I want to see all of the 6 remaining merry board members go away. Of course they don't want to "focus on recent controversies". They don't want us to focus on how they and Zoeller have managed to significantly downgrade the educational experience offered by our schools. This includes damaging the academics, sports, and yes, even the art/music program( which was also put on the chopping block by Zoeller). And all for what? To benefit their own drunk-on-power ego's? Or to chase down some crazy educational philosophy? It makes no sense. They have no idea what they are doing or why they are there. They exist to protect citizens from a crazy administration, and they failed. I sincerely hope some well meaning citizens with big hearts and common sense step forward. If they are wasting resources video taping coaches I will be pissed.

Good people. The lesser of all evils is present. Would you have liked to have Ms. Schaadt at the helm with Mr. Koch at her side. Mr. Koch missed more meetings than anybody, rarely has a report. Ms. Schaadt was in charge of special ed. Where is the director now. At least with Mrs. Hanlon, she is always around, she always finds time to talk to you. On the other hand the above comments may be very well true. Mr. Miller was the deciding vote here. Perhaps he can control Mrs. Hanlon. And I will add that Mr. Miller's car was in the lot well after an hour after the last meeting. If this new member is that interested in the going on, we may be on to something.

There were very few people at the last BOE meeting and the media coverage didn't do it justice. The first thing that happened was that Mr. Liddy attempted to have Mr. Miller tossed off the BOE before anything got underway because of a conflict of interest. Mr. Blundo reminded Mr. Liddy that it was not in the Boards prevue to do this. There is a process for such matters and it's under review. THEN the nominations for the officers came up. The choices for President were Mrs. Hanlan or Mrs. Schaadt. Mr. Blundo, Mrs. Gregory, Mrs. Mandeville, Mrs. Hanlon and Mr. Miller all voted for Hanlon. Mrs. Schaddt received votes from herself, Mr. Koch, Mr. Liddy and Mrs. Mountain. This represents a huge shift in the Board. For Vice President the choices were Koch or Mandeville. Once again the BOE voted the same way. Next meeting is January 24.

Liddy's actions says a lot about him. Liddy is afraid of Miller because Liddy is threatened by Miller. He should be. It is a good thing that Mr. Miller is now on the Board of Ed. Miller is an honest man who will do the right things by the school district. As for the voting pattern, it seems that the battle lines have been drawn. Should be a tumultuous year. Is there a reality show in the works?

"At least with Mrs. Hanlon, she is always around, she always finds time to talk to you." Yes, Common Cents, but will she do anything about what she hears or will she just do what someone in power tells her to do.
Bus Stop Talk January 13, 2013 at 05:20 PM
Yes, Andromeda. It is very disappointing. She was one of the board members who brought Zoeller in. The Iron Hoarse was correct. She did it to build up the band because her kid was in the band. How's the band doing now? We still have one of the smallest bands around, though Pena and Lawrence do a great job, which they could have done without Zoeller. Hanlon is partially to blame forall of Zoeller's crimes.
Bus Stop Talk January 13, 2013 at 05:22 PM
Hardknocks, wasn't she the Board liaison to the Athletic Department? What a mess she helped to make out of that.
Around The Block January 13, 2013 at 08:14 PM
So, Liddy is afraid of a reform candidate. Ah, what a pity!
Around The Block January 18, 2013 at 02:02 AM
I have second thoughts on Hanlon as President after reading your comments, Westwoodian. If they are voting like this then they are sticking together in opposition to the others. They are in opposition to the others because they must be tired of their bs. That could be a good thing. I think the Zoeller incident polarized the BOE. I think there is much more to that story then we were told. Much more but they will never tell us. So, we will have to read the tea leaves and they say what I just said.
Hardknocks January 18, 2013 at 12:40 PM
Is it true PL was seen helping GZ clean his office out? PL couldn't wait to get him out of town, the only good thing he's done since being on the board. If we are right someone is going to get a promotion out of this for helping or starting GeneratorGate. The voting lines have been drawn, very interesting bedfellows.....
Bus Stop Talk January 19, 2013 at 04:01 PM
I think that Around the Block may be right. Things have changed. Maybe GeneratorGate has forged a coalition of board members who will now act in the district's best interests and not just to pursue some personal agenda. I think it will be interesting to see what takes place from here on.

Westwoodian, Hardknocks, Bus Stop Talk, Common Cents, Iron Hoarse... Please attend the BOE Meeting tomorrow night. Go to www.wwrsd.org/Page/7253 and open the Agenda for tomorrow night's meeting - see Item 5/Board Motion - here we go again!!! "WHEREAS" it states my husband "declined to resolve the concern of conflict of interest..." I can assure you this is an absolute INCORRECT statement. I'm sure if you attend the meeting tomorrow night you will get the facts. Thank you.
Louise Miller January 24, 2013 at 01:22 PM
I entered the above comment last night, it posted this morning... The BOE Meeting is TONIGHT at 7:30 p.m.
andromeda January 24, 2013 at 06:07 PM
I wish I could go to the meeting, but I haven't been able to for a long time. I cant sit there quietly and watch while certain BOE members wipe their butts with the constitution. It makes me physically ill. I feel strongly this move against Miller originated with Zoeller, he still has very close ties to certain BOE members.
Louise Miller January 24, 2013 at 10:13 PM
Andromeda - I understand completely! You are correct about this "move", the tactic was used last year when he ran for the Board as well.
