Westwood, Schools Agree to Share Vehicle Repair Services

The interlocal agreement is expected to provide savings to taxpayers in both Westwood and Washington Township.

Westwood Regional Schools and the Borough of Westwood will both save money under a new interlocal agreement for vehicle repair services.

The Westwood Regional Board of Education approved the agreement during their meeting Thursday night. The Westwood Council approved it at their meeting last week.

Under the agreement, the borough will charge the schools a rate of $47 per hour for maintenance services. It takes effect September 1 and will last through June 30, 2014.

"We'll essentially be able to collect a fee for a service that stays in the town," Westwood Mayor John Birkner said at their last meeting.

School board President Roberta Hanlon noted that, unlike a private company, the borough will obtain needed parts for the schools at cost.

"It's a total savings for residents in both towns," she said.

The interlocal agreement came after meetings between borough and school officials, they said. Birkner said they hoped to arrange more agreements to save taxpayers money in the future.
