Township to Give Swim Club Deadline to Remove Equipment

The Washington Township Swim & Recreation Club has allowed contractors to store equipment on their property in exchange for services.

A practice of storing commercial equipment at the Washington Township Swim & Recreation Club has irked neighbors who complained about noise and said the equipment is an eyesore.

Mayor Janet Sobkowicz said Monday that she had compiled a list of alleged violations from several inspections and would be giving them to the club as soon as they could set up a meeting. She would also give the club a deadline to correct any violations before pursuing citations.

The club, which is located in a residential zone, could potentially receive permission from the zoning board to store equipment there. During an application process, they would still need to remove the equipment, township attorney Ken Poller said.

Township ordinance also states that the police department can issue permits to allow commercial vehicles to park in residential neighborhoods overnight.

Club Co-President Christine Murphy previously said the club had started letting some contractors park trailers in their lot as a barter for services like landscaping. The practice became necessary as the club has experienced financial difficulties, she said.

Neighbors have said the equipment has included other items like Dumpsters, a boat and a RV, though some of the equipment has since been removed.
