New Emergency Generator Arrives in Washington Township

A new emergency generator has been delivered to the Washington Township municipal building and installation is underway, according to Mayor Janet Sobkowikz.

That means the town will soon be able to stop renting a generator they've used since their old generator broke down following Hurricane Irene.

The township council voted in June to approve the $120,000 contact for the generator with TSUJ Corporation of Kinnelon following several rounds of bids which came back with results too expensive for what officials had budgeted.

The generator will provide emergency power to the municipal offices, police department and DMF. For neighbors, it is expected to be slightly quieter than the old one because of a change in positioning, officials previously said.

Township officials also recently learned they had been awarded a $142,000 grant from FEMA for energy projects, according to Sobkowicz. Because the generator was already purchased, they can't use the grant to cover that cost, but the money will likely go toward upgrading the diesel generator at the fire house to natural gas and for portable generators to power traffic lights during power outages, she said.
