The incident outside the Westwood store was still under investigation.

Update: Police Charge Driver Who Struck Hillsdale Woman

An employee at the Trader Joe's in Westwood was severely injured when she was hit by a customer's car Wednesday afternoon, according to Police Chief Frank Regino.

The driver, described as "elderly," was reportedly going to back out of a handicap space in front of the store at 3:18 p.m. when she accidentally lurched forward and struck the employee, who was getting a cart to do her own shopping, according to Regino.

The victim, who was not immediately identified by police, was severely injured and taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, Regino said. She was undergoing surgery and updates on her condition were not immediately available.

Glass windows in front of the store broke, but no one else was injured.

The store was closed as police investigated.

Investigators from the Westwood Police Department, Bergen County Sheriff's Department and Bergen County Prosecutor's Office were on the scene.
