Washington Twp. Police Car Catches Fire

The fire appeared to have been caused by an electrical problem, according to police.

A fast-acting Washington Township police officer was able to extinguish a fire in a patrol car Sunday morning.

Police Cpl. Saverio Fasciano, who also happens to be a former township fire chief, put out the fire in the driver's area of a parked 2013 Ford Interceptor at about 11:36 a.m. after police spotted a haze vehicle, according to Lt. Rich Skinner. The SUV was parked in the municipal lot and not running at the time of the fire, he said.

The fire appeared to be accidental and caused by an electrical problem, according to Skinner. The brunt of the damage was in the SUV's dashboard and floor, but there was also smoke damage and it was likely that some wiring was damaged.

The SUV had been in service with the department for several months.

It was not immediately clear whether the vehicle could be repaired or if it would need to be replaced.
