Police Charge Driver Who Struck Hillsdale Woman

Maryann Lewis, of New Milford, hit Hillsdale resident Ruta Fiorino with her car outside the Westwood Trader Joe's Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

A Hillsdale woman was still undergoing treatment Thursday after she was hit by a car outside the Westwood Trader Joe's Wednesday afternoon and the 75-year-old driver was charged with careless driving, according to Police Chief Frank Regino.

Maryann Lewis, 75, of New Milford, was reportedly going to back out of a handicap space in front of the store at 3:18 p.m. when she accidentally lurched forward and struck the victim, identified as 49-year-old Ruta Fiorino, an employee of the store who had finished her shift and was getting a cart to do her own shopping.

Fiorino suffered "massive trauma to her lower extremities" and was flown to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment, according to Regino.

Lewis' car struck the front of the store, breaking a window, but no one else was injured.

The investigation, performed by officers from the Westwood Police Department, Bergen County Sheriff's Department Bureau of Criminal Identification and Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit, was still ongoing, according to Regino.
