Hillsdale Police Swear-In New Sergeant, Officer

Hillsdale Police swore-in their new sergeant and patrolman this week.

Sergeant Sean Smith and Patrolman Ryan Norton both took their oaths of office Monday, officially marking their new positions, though they had already been serving.

Smith has been with the Hillsdale Police Department for more than 15 years. He has served as the D.A.R.E. officer and schools coordinator. 

"We could have promoted any of them, but we saw Sean as the best fit for our current needs," Police Chief Chip Stalter previously told Patch.

Hillsdale has four police sergeants. One supervises each shift.

Norton comes to Hillsdale from Montclair State University's campus police force, and was previously a Passaic County Sheriff's investigator. 

The new patrolman started last month, and already helped save a life with CPR, Stalter said.

Police have not yet filled the position left open by Ramon Cruz, who left Hillsdale for a job with the Bergenfield Police Department.
