Hillsdale Police Hire New Officer

Ryan Norton starts as the borough's newest police officer Monday.

The Hillsdale Police Department recently hired Ryan Norton as its newest officer, according to Police Chief Chip Stalter. Norton starts Monday.

Norton, a graduate of William Paterson University, comes to Hillsdale from Montclair State University's campus police force, and was previously a Passaic County Sheriff's investigator.

Stalter told Patch that Norton stood out because he has a record of productivity and also wants to be involved with schools and the community.

"He seemed to be the best fit for our department," Stalter said.

Norton will be filing the space left by Jeff Angermeyer, who left the borough for a job with the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office. Stalter previously said the new officer would likely save between $50,000 and $70,000 in salary compared to Angermeyer.

The borough also expects to see for all shifts instead of police officers, who are paid more per hour.

Stalter is also in the process of interviewing candidates interested in being promoted to sergeant. Former Hillsdale Police Sergeant John Scordato retired earlier this year, and the department has been short one sergeant since then.
