Robert Conover Sr. Dies at 100

Robert F. Conover Sr., long-time resident of Hillsdale, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2013 at the age of 100.

He was born August 25, 1913 in Bronx, New York to the late Frank R. Conover and Augusta L Ecke. The family later moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. and to Hillsdale when Bob was 8 years old. Beloved husband for 75 years to Melba B. Conover and devoted father to Lorraine (Bunny) and Frank Giordano, Robert Jr. and Deborah Conover, Patricia and Santo Sacco, and Aileen and Rhys Williams. Loving "Pop" to 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Conover was employed as a photo-engraver by Horan Engraving in NYC for 49 years. In the early 1930's he played semi-pro ice hockey in the Bear Mountain area. He was a self-taught auto and home repairman and briefly served on the Hillsdale Board of Adjustment. 

He was also involved with Boy Scouts and Little League in Hillsdale and continued rooting for the Brooklyn Dodgers even though they left their fans for the west coast. An avid reader and train collector, he loved spending time with his family. Mr. Conover was a member of the National Railroad Historical Society and Train Collectors Association and a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Church in Hillsdale. 

The family will receive their relatives and friends at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. Funeral mass to be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Church, Hillsdale, on Friday at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Ascension Cemetery, Airmont, N.Y.
