Republicans Win District 39

Sen. Gerald Cardinale and Asw. Holly Schepisi were both re-elected and Bob Auth was elected to his first term on the state Assembly, according to unofficial results.

Republican candidates won all three seats representing District 39 in the state legislature, according to unofficial results from the Bergen County Clerk.

In the Senate race, incumbent Gerald Cardinale defeated Democrat Jan Bidwell with 31,040 votes, or about 64 percent, compared to her 17,373 votes, about 36 percent.

Cardinale has served in the state Senate since 1982 and was a member of the Assembly prior to that.

In the Assembly race, incumbent Holly Schepisi and newcomer Robert Auth both won, with 30,121 votes and 27,390 votes, respectively. They defeated Democrats Donna Abene and Anthony Iannarelli, who received 18,074 and 16,629 votes, respectively.

Schepisi was first elected to the Assembly in 2011. She has also served as River Vale's borough attorney and Oakland's public defender.

Auth is the GOP chairman in Old Tappan. He will be taking the seat currently held by Robert Schroeder, who did not seek re-election this year.
