Republicans Sweep Washington Township

Janet Sobkowicz, Tom Sears and Peter Calamari won the local election.

Washington Township's three Republican candidates won the two council seats and mayor position in this year's local election, according to unofficial results.

Mayor Janet Sobkowicz, who ran unopposed, has a total of 1,779 votes. Council candidates Peter Calamari and Tom Sears had 1,662 and 1,654 votes, respectively.

Democrat Rosa D'Ambra had 762 votes and independent candidate Michael Ullman had 245, according to the unofficial results.

"I'm really happy because the people put their faith in us to do the job for the next four years," Sobkowicz said.

Sears and Calamari pledged to work with Sobkowicz to "move the town forward."

"I look forward to working as a team with the council and mayor," Calamari said.

Sobkowicz pointed to ongoing projects like the new cell tower and emergency generator as ones she expected to complete early in her new term, along with a new playground and other work at Memorial Field and the 2014 budget. She also pledged to keep the town residential.

"I think the next few years should be very productive for Washington Township," Sears said.
