Week in Review: Iron Horse Reopens

A look back at the past week in Westwood and Washington Township.

officially , less than five months after a fire destroyed the kitchen and nearly took down the entire building.

Kitchen Manager Sean Tremble said the restaurant is planning a grand reopening ceremony for March 21, which also happens to The Iron Horse's 40th anniversary.

A one-legged wild turkey, which some Washington Township residents feared was in danger, was Residents who feed the turkey, nicknamed Eileen, were concerned for the bird's safety after witnesses saw a pair of men take her away last weekend.

$2,700 was offered by residents for Eileen's return before she was found at the animal rehabilitation facility. She was treated for an infection and is now back in Washington Township.

Westwood Mayor John Birkner said he thinks the borough should consider with Washington Township after Westwood Police hosted a successful test of shared emergency dispatching for the two towns Tuesday.

The eventual plan, which is still in the works, would be to have an autonomous dispatching service shared between Westwood, Washington Township, River Vale and Old Tappan. Birkner said a temporary agreement could save money while the full deal is worked out.

The Westwood Zoning Board continued hearing testimony Monday about at the site of the former Chevy dealer on Kinderkamack Road. Applicant Nicholas Aynilian has requested a use variance to allow "general retail" at the site, which is currently only zoned for some specific retail uses.

Westwood officials are in the process of planning some Borough Planner Ed Snieckus said he wants to respect the existing conditions while improving the space.
