Senior Patch: Golden Seniors Meeting and More

This is the place to learn about senior news and activities

Welcome to The Senior Patch, where we highlight items of interest to seniors. If you have an idea for something to include, send an e-mail to afrom@udel.edu.

Bergen County Y, a Jewish Community Center, 605 Pascack Road, Washington Township:

The  offers senior programs. Lunch is served Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon for senior members. The UJA Federation of Northern New Jersey and the U.S.D.A. subsidize the lunches. There are often special programs that coincide with the meals.

Golden Seniors of the Township of Washington:

The next meeting of the Golden Seniors of the Township of Washington will be Wednesday, Jan. 11 from noon to 2:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Jack Woods Senior Center in the , 350 Hudson Ave.

Westwood Senior Fellowship:

The Westwood Senior Fellowship meets the second Tuesday of each month from noon to 2 p.m. at the , 55 Jefferson Ave., except for July and August. The group also has "Fun Day" the fourth Tuesday of each month.

Westwood Recreation Department, 55 Jefferson Ave., Westwood:

The  is has a fitness class to replace Jazzercise Lite for seniors older than 55 on Tuesdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the , 55 Jefferson Ave. The fitness class will incorporate cardio and strength training and conditioning and is intended for men and women of all fitness levels, even those who want to take the class from a chair. Elaine Blumenthal, who has 10 years of teaching experience, is the instructor for the class.

"Our goal is to promote a healthy lifestyle for our mature residents," said Recreation Director Gary Buchheister. "We encourage anyone who is either recently retired or just interested in a light exercise program to participate."

Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothes and bring a water bottle, towel and hand weights. Classes are free for Westwood residents and non-residents can register for $15 per month. Call the Recreation Department Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 201-664-7882 to register.

Senior Bus Schedule in Washington Township:

Seniors should call the  at 201-664-3268 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Here is the schedule:

Monday:

  • The bus leaves the DPW garage at 10 a.m. to pick up residents.
  • The bus returns to ShopRite at noon to drive residents home.

Wednesday (when there is a senior meeting):

  • The bus leaves the DPW garage at 11 a.m. to pick up residents.
  • The bus is parked outside the senior center at 2 p.m. to drive residents home.

Friday (alternates between Westwood Plaza and Paramus Park):

  • The bus leaves the DPW garage at 10 a.m. to pick up residents.
  • The bus returns to Westwood Plaza or Paramus Park at 12:30 p.m. to drive residents home.

Doctor Appointments:

  • Seniors must make their appointments on days the bus is available and within certain hours.
