What Businesses Would You Like at The Former Westwood Chevy?

An application which requested a convenience store use variance was rejected by the Westwood Zoning Board this month.

An application to build a five-unit strip mall at the former Chevrolet of Westwood on Kinderkamack Road was denied by the Westwood Zoning Board earlier this month.

The developer had requested a convenience store use variance to allow a 7-Eleven to occupy a portion of the space, which board members said was one of their concerns before voting against the plan.

The same developer has also filed an application for a similar strip mall at the empty lot across the street.

The site is located on Kinderkamack Road next to the cemetery near the Emerson border. It's in a "limited business" zone, meaning that only some specific retail uses, like large appliance stores or antique stores, or allowed.

The property's owner previously said he believed that none of the permitted uses could be successful at the site, which has been empty for several years since the Chevy dealer closed.

What kind of business would you like to see in the former Chevrolet of Westwood? Share your ideas in the comments below.

Quick check and Wawa same block right in the middle of a supermarket...might that not be overkill...

Please, no more apartments of any kind. Westwood, is unfortunately one of the most congested towns in the Pascack Valley, our schools and roads cannot take any more residents. The over crowding in the class rooms is bad enough, thanks to the huge complex on kinderkamack ave. This was not well thoughtout before it was built. 40% of our town is rentals which is unappealing to home buyers, lowers our home values and effects our schools in a negative way. The surrounding towns view our town as the pit of the Pascack Valley. It would be nice to have anything that can improve the appearance of that area. It has a Industrial feel when you drive through, not small town appeal.

Westwood is congested because it is a thriving community and a 'destination' for out-of-town shoppers, despite its being "The Pit of The Pascack Valley". I do agree that there are a lot of apartments and condos (BTW - Westwood Hills has been there for probably 40 years) but people who live in private homes have children too.

Buffy: How do rentals (especially those that have been there for a generation) "effect our schools in a negative way"? (That should be "affect" anyway, not "effect") Are you saying that there are a lot of seniors in the rentals that vote down school budgets, or because there might be people whose nationality you think might be unseemly living there? I live in the district too, and my taxes go up every year because the budgets are passed. So...I can only assume it's the latter. So come on out and admit it.

B@B....sounds to me like Buffy was concerned about the congestion hurting the schools. ...but nice attempt at playing the "race card"...pretty weak argument there. Remember how we knocked a perfectly good school down to sell it and put up townhouses? ...so I think it's more of the homes/residents per sq. foot that Buffy is talking about. More kids= more students/per teacher...one of the things that ranks our schools...and makes us more or less appealing. Ask yourself this: How many rentals does Allendale, or Upper Saddle River, or Park Ridge have vs. us?...do you rent B@B? Are you looking at this objectively?

A nice restaurant with an attractive parking lot - trees, green areas- or perhaps a car dealership, but again the building & lot area should be attractive.

"The Pit of The Pascack Valley"... I love my town. I don't think anything about it relates to a pit (except the bus shelter on the corner of Westwood Ave & Broadway). I suggested additional SENIOR housing, because while the Westwood House is a lovely and long standing property in Westwood it has a waiting list. As many of us know there are scores of residents born and raised in WW. Many own homes they can no longer afford/care for or cannot afford or simply don’t want to live outside of WW. Perhaps considering the addition of affordable, attractive, clean housing where the SENIOR population can remain part of our community is worth a thought.
