Westwood Ambulance Collides With SUV

The ambulance was headed to a mutual aid call in Hillsdale and was not carrying a patient at the time.

A Westwood ambulance and a SUV collided on Broadway near the Westwood Plaza late Thursday morning.

The ambulance was headed north to a mutual aid call in Hillsdale, Police Chief Frank Regino said. A River Vale resident in a Nissan SUV was driving down Lake Street toward Broadway and reportedly accelerated to make it through the intersection before the traffic light changed, he said. The ambulance had slowed down at the intersection and had just begun to move forward again when the vehicles collided.

The driver of the SUV was hospitalized with minor injuries, Regino said. No one in the ambulance was injured.

The accident was still under investigation Thursday afternoon.

There was no patient in the ambulance at the time of the accident.

There was a horrific 1-car accident this mrng coming off of Forest Avenue heading towards Ackerman Road.

I'm not sure what this guy was trying to do but he was going too fast and took out a few road signs before the car rolled twice and smacked into a telephone pole.

The drive was upside down and alive somehow. I had to leave but the police and other emergency responders were flocking to the scene.

Very, very lucky that no one else got hurt.

The interesting thing about this story is that Westwood was actually to get a crew
together for Hillsdale. It's usually the other way around. And why is anyone who drives a volunteer ambulance (especially in the pascack valley) afraid or embarrassed to use the siren until they are IN the intersection?
