Police Car Hits Jogger

A 28-year-old Westwood resident and a police officer were hospitalized after the incident.

A Westwood Police Officer driving on Westwood Avenue hit a jogger when she ran through a red light at an intersection Wednesday morning, according to Police Chief Frank Regino.

The woman, a 28-year-old Westwood resident, was jogging south on Kinderkamack Road and the officer was driving east through a green light on Westwood Avenue when the incident occured. Regino said the woman hit the side of the car and remained conscious afterward.

The jogger was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center. Her injuries did not appear to be life-theatening, according to Regino.

Regino said the officer "was extremely shaken up" and was taken to the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood.

If this police officer is shaken up by having a jogger run into her car, and needs to be taken to the hospital, perhaps she needs to be looking for a new line of work. Dog walking, perhaps? Walmart greeter? Can you imagine how poorly she would react to an armed assailant? Unruly mob? Break in?

I believe the officer is a man but yeah. And he didn't even hit her...SHE ran into HIM. I'm sure that can be unnerving and the officer was worried about the jogger...but the phrase "extremely shaken up" does not instill confidence. At least both are going to be fine.

The jogger was seriously injured. If you go to cliffviewpilot.com you will see the story and the update to her condition. As to your callous remark about the cop it is ridiculous to not be shaken up by such a accident. So if you had a collision with a jogger you would be fine right afterwards. Really? Well then there might be something wrong with you. I am sure the officer involved whomever he is was replaying the accident in his mind and was disturbed as their line of work is to serve and protect. The last thing any of them wants to do is to harm someone whether or not it was the jogger who ran into him.

On the one hand, you have NYPD cops that deal with real life and death issues every day, and soldier on. Then you have the cops making the big bucks patrolling the lovely suburbs and are traumatized by joggers running into their shiny Crown Vics. Hmmm.

If you are not a a first responder - and I can tell by your comment Kelly that you are not - you should not make comments on how a police officer is supposed to react to any situation. Until you are willing to put your life on the line everyday for the sake of complete strangers you should really keep your mouth shut. After all, the next time you or a loved one is sick or hurt or your house was broken into or is on fire or you yourself is ever in a car accident, it will be one of those police officers who respond first to your call for help.

Ny no means I am not denigrating the work of first responders. I am, however, questioning whether this particular officer is in the right line of work, in that he/she was 'extremely shaken up' and had to be taken to the hospital because a jogger ran into him/her. I would hope that if the police responded to an emergency, they would be a little more steely than this officer. That's all.

first of all state law say's person in the cross-walk has the right of way, note all the sign's at all the cross-walk's on westwood ave. And as far as the first-responder's put'n thier life on the line, that's thier JOB that's why they get over 100,000 a year!!

There are plenty of jobs for educated people that pay equal to or more what the first responders make. However, there are only a few careers that involve risking your life for strangers. Besides, the comments above referred to how the officer reacted. These people choose a career to help others so of course they would be traumatized when someone is hurt.
Not that it matters now, but you should read NEW JERSEY STATUTE 39:4-36.

Kinderkamack and Westwood intersection is a stoplight, so the right of way goes to the person with the green light. In this case, the cop.

First the life on the line thing is a situation that is few and far inbetween. You all should give up on that. The way people drive on the Parkway is more dangerous than what is encountered in these municipalities. A professional driver, which a policeman is should have been more aware of their surroundings. Part of this problem is the 12 hour shifts. If a professional truck driver can only drive for 10 hours or 500 miles a day, why are our professionals allowed 12? A driver less fatigued most likely would have avoided this, unless they were blabbing on thier cell phone as we all seem to witness every day.

Not yet. Jeff must hang out with them, he must have spent some time in the back of a squad car to be so unhappy.

MAYBE these Westwood cops should SLOW down. They drive through this town like they are constantly on their way to a life & death situation when in fact, they are headed absolutely nowhere. I see them first hand speed up and down my street like it's the autobahn. (center ave) Perhaps if they followed the laws themselves, this unfortunate situation would have been foreseen and avoided. Afterall, if you are paying attention, you can see someone running up a sidewalk and into a crosswalk IF you are paying attention to your surroundings.

Well the same could be said for the jogger. I don't know what she could have been doing that prevented her from seeing the stoplight(s) as well as a police car that probably still had headlights on at 6:30 in the morning. I can see this accident happening on a quiet, dark side street, but Westwood Ave and Kinderkamack intersection is pretty hard to miss.

But yeah...the cops do tend to ignore their own rules.

The law-abiding citizens do not have a problem with the cops. It is the criminals and low lifes that have the issues, especially in Westwood. You should do everyone a favor and the next time you need to dial 911 for help - DON'T!!!

WOW! I'm surprised at the negative comments. I'm just glad everyone is OK. Perhaps this accident will make everyone pause and re-assess what they are doing and how they are doing it. It's really dark in the early AM.

As I see it: Did the runner have on the earphones and was possible listening to music instead of paying attention? Did she have on the proper reflective vest to be seen easier, especially at that time of the morning?
And it's always the PD that take the hit if something happens like this. If you really think about it, do you think it was the officers fault? He had the green light, she was the one that ran into the car, so she had to have stepped off the sidewalk to get there. Therefore, she was the one that was not paying attention. People always take for granted that the PD and emergency personnel are going to be there when they are needed. So stop putting them down and be thankful they are there when they are needed. Unless you walk in their shoes, how do you know they feel? They do have feelings, as I would hope everyone does.

Look, nobody here is bad mouthing the work of police officers, even highly paid ones in the suburbs. What we are questioning is the fact this this officer felt the need to go to the hospital because she/he was "traumatized'. Good thing the jogger wasn't a bank robber? The PO would have been left positively catatonic by the episode!
