Irish Eyes Imports Closing
The store's owners blame the poor economy for having to shut down the shop, which has been in Bergen County since 1985.
Irish Eyes Imports, a shop specializing in all things from the Emerald Isle, will be closing their doors after more than 25 years of business in Bergen County.
Owner Gene Callaghan said they were forced to close the store because of the poor economy.
"We just can't make people spend money they don't have," Callaghan said.
The store originally opened in Ridgewood in 1985. Gene and Tara Callaghan bought the store about five years ago and moved it to Westwood in 2010.
There is not definite closing date set yet, but it will likely happen sometime in January, Callaghan said. Until then, the shop is holding a large sale with all of their merchandise marked down 30 percent or more.
Callaghan said they plan to continue the business online via their website.

Didn't he move out of Ridgewood claiming that high rents in the Village were his major business problem? I guess there was more to the story . . .

Nothing more than a poor economy

Boyd, somebody goes down and you just kick him...he has lived in Ridgewood his whole life!!! That sickens me. He has a family too. You should apologize.

Excuse me? When he moved his business from Ridgewood, he basically had no kind words for Ridgewood's landlords. Who owes who an apology?

You owe the apology Boyd. Not too many people have good things to say about Ridgewood landlords. I am a Ridgewood resident and have heard and known of some horrific situations about landlords here in town.

I agree with Boyd. The store is already a goner, so I doubt very much whether the owner gives a hoot about Boyd's comment and I doubt even more that the owner feels any better if you offer condolences. Like Boyd, I recall the owner leaving Ridgewood in a huff and a lot of people here saying what a better run shopping environment existed in Westwood. As for the store, I see no market for such chatskies.

I loved your store. I'm sorry to see it go. Maybe a well-advertised Internet site will be more lucrative---no rent!
On Saturday when I walked into the Irish Stepdancing competition I saw a whole bunch of vendors there. Perhaps that is one extra venue for sales? Some of that
fine knitwear, baby bonnets, occasion cards will catch the Irish eyes of families waiting for their kids to perform? A
small giveaway at a performance advertises you are
there? Just some thoughts...Will a few vendors in Ridgewood and Westwood carry a few your items on consignment, along with info on the site? Irish baby sweaters on consignment at hospital gift shops??

Sorry to learn this. I tried to find the Westwood store once with no luck. Good luck in future ventures.

Once again, Boyd comes on here to stir the pot and be a pain. Such a shame that he feels the need to be a bully, a know-it-all and a wiseass. And of all places, a little website. I guess the only way he can be a big fish is to swim in this small pond.

How about an update on the newly opened Raymond restaurant? We all wish them great success.
I was there with many others peering through to windows and noticed all the tables set up and it looked wonderful. I was ready to try it out but, they weren't opened yet and no hours posted.
Perhaps, James can do an update..... and I'll buy the lunch or breakfast for all the first time visitors..............

Here's an update, Dom: It's still not open. Should be up in a week or two (maybe less?).

I am sorry to hear about this...yet another store that actually sells something people might use or enjoy leaving. What I like better about Westwood's downtown (aside from parking!) over Ridgewood is that there are more actual STORES, it isn't just restaurants and banks. My father's wife is of Irish extraction and when they were in town she just LOVED this store. Nice people, nice merchandise. It's a shame the town could not sustain it.

Re Raymonds: A reliable source tells me the certificate of occupancy is not a problem. Story on the opening coming tomorrow morning.

I shopped this store when it was in Ridgewood and made many purchases. I could not travel to the location in Westwood Sorry to see a store with so many articles from Ireland and you didn't need to be Irish to buy them for friends. Good luck, Gene and Tara, with the Internet business.

So sorry to see this store go. We shopped in Ridgewood & Westwood, but unfortunately, just for special occasions and gifts. Good luck on-line. The idea about going to step-dancing competitions is a good one. My daughter dances for Broesler and their Feis is in February.

I'm sad to see any store close. But I do recall lots of press with the 'departure and relocation to Westwood' with blame squarely focused on Ridgewood rents, parking, etc and every other possible perception.

They should have moved to a smaller location in Ridgewood instead of going to Westwood. And I too remember them be very harsh with their words.

Thanks for all the Kind comments. It was a hard sad decision, but the economy finally caught up with us. We loved both our locations very much, but I stand by my words about Ridgewood. Ridgewood needs a vision and right now it is going down a slippery slope. Retail is being replaced by Food and spas. Ridgewood needs to promote retial in town and limit the Banks, Food and services along Ridgewood ave. Create an outdoor shopping mall feel. Boyd, If we stayed in Ridgewood we would have closed two years ago. The Landlord was raising the rent. Given the presnt econmy I think any tenant would be upset. Again thanks for all the good wishes we will need them all as we try to re-invent ourselves again in these scary times.
