Hillsdale Mom Needs Bone Marrow Transplant
There will be a donor drive Sunday to search for a match for Karen Takla-Farag.
A Hillsdale resident diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia is seeking a bone marrow donor.
Karen Takla-Farag, the mother of a kindergarten student at Meadowbrook School and a parishioner at St. John's, was diagnosed with cancer last month. She requires a bone marrow transplant.
A donor drive has been scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Westwood Community Center on Jefferson Avenue. Attendees will have the inside of their cheeks swabbed to test if they are a match.
"Karen is amazing person," Hillsdale resident Frank Pizzella wrote in an email. "She is a loving and a giving mother, daughter and friend. We must find a match."
For more information, contact Frank Pizzella at (201) 446-6213 or pizzellaf@aol.com.

For The Record

The test to find out if you are a match is less burdensome than brushing your teeth! If you are lucky enough to be a match for Karen or some other person in need, the donation process is EASY, and can save a life. What could be more rewarding than helping a neighbor get well? Having had the cousin to leukemia, lymphoma, I have witnessed many friends gravely ill, hoping for a generous person to help. If people knew how easy it was to get involved, I think they would rush to help. Stop by the drive on Sunday and ask how easy it is.
