'Here Comes the Sun' Salon Owners Return to Westwood

Glow Hair Designers recently opened on Center Avenue..

A new hair salon in downtown Westwood offers service from an experienced team who previously ran a similar business in town years ago.

Glow Hair Designers, located at 178 Center Ave., is owned by Santo and Donna Scuderi, the same team who owned Here Comes the Sun, which opened in Westwood during the 1970s. When they started, perms and afros were in style. Over the years, straight hair has become more popular. Their experience has given them the know-how to style hair however a customer wants, Donna Scuderi said.

"We started curling their hair," she said. "Now we're straightening their hair. In hair design, everything comes full circle."

The Scuderis have been big in Bergen County hair for decades, eventually starting their first salon — and one of the first unisex hair salons — in Hackensack, also called Here Comes the Sun. A column on early unisex hair salons published in The Record last month named Here Comes the Sun first among those where county residents remembered going for "shag" haircuts.

After they moved to Old Tappan and found many of their customers were also moving north, they opened up a second location on Broadway in Westwood, so opening their new salon here was a natural choice, Donna Scuderi said.

Among their services, Glow offers all phases of hair styling and cutting. They use European vegetable-based hair dye on par with world-class salons and natural treatments for frizziness.

Glow will be offering different specials each day for the rest of the month. For more info, or to schedule an appointment, call (201) 664-5540.
