Dunkin Donuts Returning to Washington Township
The Washington Township Planning Board is scheduled to hear a plan to open a Dunkin Donuts in the Town Center strip mall later this month.
An applicant has filed to open a new Dunkin Donuts in the Washington Town Center strip mall, replacing one which previously closed.
Keith Rasquinha, who originally ran the Dunkin Donuts there, has proposed to open a new Dunkin Donuts in the 1,332-square-foot space between BK Tae Kwon Do and Wing Lee Kitchen in the mall, near its former location between Subway and Dairy Queen.
"He is excited about returning to the Washington Town Center and we are thrilled to have him come back," John Azarian, the mall's leasing agent, told Patch.
The plan calls for a new, multi-colored sign similar to those found at other Dunkin Donuts locations around the area, which is now allowed thanks to a change in the township's sign ordinance approved by the council last year. The old Dunkin Donuts had a blue sign in the same font as most of the other businesses in the mall.
The plan will need approval from the township before they can open. The Planning Board is expected to hear the application at their next meeting February 27.
Azarian said he is also working with several other interested parties about "various uses" in the Town Center, but could not yet speak about any of them.
Planning Board Chairman Gus Calamari said at their previous meeting that Original Pizza was also planning to return to the Town Center. The owners of Original Pizza could not immediately be reached for comment.

Why does the planning board have to be involved? I thought the strip mall was privately owned? Are they afraid it might compete with Sky Trading's convenience store?

The Planning Board is empowered to hear three types of matters: subdivisions, site plans and conditional use applications. B@B - I am also unclear why this application must go before the Planning Board. I wouldn't think that a restaurant is a conditional use in the strip mall.

That's funny...I was just driving past that mall yesterday thinking about how much I missed DD. Then I thought...hmm, I bet it closed because without that a bright orange sign (as hideous as it is) no one knew it was there. Welcome back!

Good to hear DD coming back but hope not the same as the old one which wasn't the cleanest and the heat was always cranked up to about 90 !

Carmela ... It is a stretch to call Vincent's a pizzeria. I went there with my kids after a movie and not only is the pizza tasteless but the restaurant is not children friendly! I dont know what competition you will be talking about! Bring back DD and originals like the good old days making the shopping center convenient and purposeful again!

Can we work on filling the empty spaces with meaningful stores? The last thing we need are more chains and junk food. We should open boutiques, book stores, specialty stores to set the town apart and make the shopping experience unique. There is an opportunity to do this with all of the empty space and attract residents from all over Bergen County. Instead, the stores that are there make WT look like a middle of no-where middle class town.

MA: Unfortunately, boutiques have not done well at the strip mall. Two of them came and went with barely a ripple. So did the dog bakery. Mom & Pop bookstores are struggling and so are the giants like Barnes and Noble, which is closing about 1/3 of its stores. I think a place like Cool Beans in Oradell would be great to provide some "nightlife" for youngsters -- open mike comedy nights, poetry readings, local musicians. But of course the minute you start talking "Coffee", you'll get both the bagel shop and DD going nuts (the way Vincents will go nuts if Original tries to come back). I was thinking the way people in town like to decorate, a party supply store might do well...and I would love to have a hardware store again. If the Rite-Aid goes out when the inevitable CVS happens (and you know it WILL happen), that would be a good site for an Ace Hardware.

You live in this Middle class town and I am damn Proud to say i do too .. Boutiques?? you want boutiques go to tices corner ... yes the stores need to be filled but to call a pizzeria junk food ?? your off your rocker... this is what this town has always had I dont see any reason why Vincents should even be putting in any comments they are a restaurant ! not a pizzeria -- hell go to westwood theres 5 within a 3 block radius They all get along ..thats the problem with this town to much beurocratic politics.. everybody wants to make a change then when change happens everybody's got a say !

MA, really? filling empty spaces with meaningful stores? you think a boutique in Washington Twp is a meaningful store? I lived in Washington twp my whole life 44 years I have seen MANY stores come and go the one thing I know for sure is Twp residents do NOT want a Boutique or book store - they want store that they can afford. Twp houses mostly middle class families , obviously you did not come from around here you do not understand what Twp really represents. There was a boutique or two even a high end shoe store - guess what it didn't fly- they had to close- are you looking to see another store fail in that strip mall? I am curious to ask where did you grow up? our town is a quaint town and teh shopping center serves our needs, if a boutique is what you want go shop in Westwood. Sounds like before you decide to suggest anymore ideas for store you really understand the meaning behind Washington Twp. It is a family town, that's what I loved about it. Another factor is most of the highschool kids go to that strip mall thats what keeps those businesses in business, why would you ever want to change that to something that will never be? If you are looking for high end stores and fancy restaurants go to Ridgewood they have an abundance of them.

Wow, MA, the tigers are definitely out, lol. I wouldn't call them meaningless stores but, like you, I would prefer a slightly more upscale unique, or diverse, mall. The incessant bashing over the mall occupants tells me that you and I are probably in the minority. If Subway, Dairy Queen, Pops and, now DD's success were dependent on me, none of them would survive (and what I remember of Original, the place was downright awful). I am just not a fast/junk food lover but apparently many residents are very happy about DD and are keeping Subway in business so I humbly accept my minority position. (As Bob suggested, I would more appreciate a Cool Beans type of business over a DD any day). As for pizza, it would be a conflict of interest with Vincent's. I'll stick with Vincent's for a great byo dinner and Anthony Franco's (who deliver) or Esposito's for good pizza when I have my cravings, thank you. Let's hope cool heads and common sense prevail in the end....

I think it is a shame that anyone would refer to Originals as not so good. Growing up in a very Italian family this is the only Italian place that we would order food from. The pizza was the best in the area and nobody has even come close since they have left. I actually use to drive to Parsippany just to get some of there food when they moved establishments....yes I did!! Not only that....they were a family place....you brought your parents, kids, friends...whomever....you were always welcome. I grew up there...they are wonderful people who I personally would LOVE to come back to our family town. I would that whole strip mall to be filled with community members who want to always be a part of a community. I hope this rumor is a true one I will welcome them home with open arms.

Bringing Dunkin Donuts back is a great move. The foot traffic at the strip mall has been down substantially since it closed. A pizza place is also a good move as long as the prices are better than the last incarnation of Original Pizza. Spending $2-$3 more for a plain pie when you can get one in Hillsdale or Westwood for 12 bucks that is better quality is a recipe that will result in another business eventually shutting down. I would suggest to Vincent's that they do away with their blacked out windows. All it does is make the space looked shut down (who is the marketing genius that came up with the idea of blacked out windows for a stripmall location? Just silly. Bad review in the Bergen Record didn't help either) I agree that the Rite Aid may be on borrowed time given the huge new CVS in Westwood

Alex Iglesias, 35, 30 of those growing up in Twp. I welcome the DD back. Our current Bagel Shop is a disgrace to the old one. It would also be great to have Dom
and Vinnie back with the puzza shop. Some old spots were the 5-10 store owned by Young, Wildridge Pharmacy and Township Hardware for those who recall. Boutiques are not Twp. We're a small town still. Always will be. It's not about affording it, I afford my place in Manhattan as well, but rather keeping the integrity of who we are.

LOL LINDA NEEDS TO GET OUT MORE !! ... the 3 pizzerias she claims that are good all have bad ratings on yelp ! LOL .. and as for a cool beans instead of dunking donuts .. i would rather pay 1.25 for my coffee than 3.00... some people just dont understand that this is a family town ... not HIGH END ! the kids need a place to hang after school ..let me as another question why do you think the post office is in the back ? If they wanted to just fill stores that would have been moved... they want quality .. and Originals is quality .. in the past there was always a restaurant by the theatre and originals was at the other end ... it was NEVER AN ISSUE ! Vincents wanted to be a trattoria well now they can kick themselves in the can .... thats what you get for not catering to kids !

Calm down oh insular one. I think you need to spread your wings and shed the overly possessive, small town mentality. We are ALL entitled to our opinions and, despite your ranting and misguided delusion of being the voice of the township, thankfully you are not a viable decision maker.
Now open your mind, breathe and raise the bar a bit, CATD. Don't limit the possibilities and sell the town short (in your words "just a family town, not high end"). Yes, we are a family town...but even a sweet little family town can afford (and should pursue) a little sophistication. Trust me, it will do more to "nourish" and "cater" to our children than a bloody 500-900 calorie doughnut or calzone! Raise your expectations and broaden your horizons a bit..

Can't wait for Origionals to be back. Real Italians know its the only pizza worth eating anywhere in the pascack valley, and I'll gladly pay the extra two bucks a pie to avoid the disgusting out of a can sauce these other local pizzerias put out and claim to be homemade. As for "high end shops" while it would be nice for some diversity, it just will never work, the shopping center lacks the space and layout to give you that downtown retail and commercial kind of feel. As a life long WT resident, I prefer it that way, go shop in Paramus or Westwood, our little shopping center is about necessity
